Cheap $0.27 ZX14 TRE done in 15 minutes
02/09/09 6:29 PM

This is a HOW-TO from the zx14ninja.com forum. It was posted by dattaway on 1/27/2008.

I haven't seen any posts on the internet yet giving exact details how this was done. The purpose of this mod is to get the full 6th gear timing and fuel curves in all gears. I found a single 220 ohm resistor to work perfectly. The neutral light works properly and all gear positions show up as "6" If Radio Shack sells electronic parts anymore, they might still have a package of them for $0.27. That's the $0.27.

The fifteen minutes is looking for the gearshift position switch connector and splicing the resistor in there. Looking above the shifter and just to the right of the white overflow reservoir, there's the green connector. Its tucked in there, but a finger should easily pull it out for full access. Squeeze the tab to pull it out. Cut a few inches of the harness covering to expose the four wires. One 220 ohm resistor is needed. The color code is red-red-brown followed by a silver or gold band. Splice one side end of the resistor into the black wire. Cut the green/red striped wire. The other end of the resistor splices into connector side of this green/red wire. Tape or heat shrink off the unused remaining wire from the switch.

Test the gears by rotating the rear tire on a stand and working the shifter. The neutral light should work and every gear should be in 6. I have the flies out and the acceleration seems much more natural with no more dips in the throttle. The difference could be felt right away. The ZX14 has a very good feel for it. I have about 100 miles on this mod and throttle control just feels better. Oh, it can wheelie very well too.

Has anyone tried this and is there any thing that could be harmed by this. I am mostly interested in having my display show only one gear as I have a 43 rear sprocket so the display will show the correct gear for a few seconds the will show the next lower gear. I have tried to ignore the display but keep looking at it and it drives me nut ( I know short trip), I think if it displays the same gear all the time I will ignore it and count gears as I have done an all my other bikes as none had a gear display and if I can gain a little more horse power just a bonus .

I have never heard of the gear indicator being disrupted by sprocket gearing. I have 17/45 and my gear indicator works as it always did.

I have seen small aftermarket gear indicators that people sometimes use when the OREM indicator is disabled from modding. That may be what you want if you TRE your bike. I would check into why the gear indicator is bouncing around as you describe.

Rook , I put on a speedometer correcter on and was told here that the gear display problem was related to the rpm sensor and that short of changing back to stock gearing nothing could be done to correct it. The main thing I am worried about with this method is there a possibility of shorting or messing anything else up on the bike. I am a very good shade tree mechanic but all the new electronics scare me.
