FUEL GAUGE FLASHING LOW ALL THE TIME
08/11/13 7:08 PM

Hello, first post ever... I need some help please!? I have a 2007 zx14 and my fuel gauge is flashing "E" all the time. Ran the tank dry three times after a complete refill. No change, installed brand new fuel level sender/float... No change. Unhooked battery for at least ten minutes...no change. Disconnected battery again, then disconnected the gauge panel...reconnected both...no change. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS. THANKS!!

I believe it's a memory lag or learn process? My suggestion is to keep the wallet closed so you stop reaching around changing out good parts. Not that you did a bad or wrong thing. You did fine. Now, this should tell you a few things.

I think one is how common this is. Someone else had the same thing or close to it I forget? The point I'm making is how they may have too ran low on fuel, set the light fandango as yours is doing now.

WATT I suggested was to let it ride, do nothing, so there was more of a key turning event happening. That would keep the memory checking. You know, the needles swinging, the choke set, all the parameters pinged and checked off so no code appears... Okay, sans your blink. And no, don't sit there turning the key on and off. I think there may be more to it.

Since this may take, I know I know, you did that already. Anyway, if it gets annoying, tape over the blink, use your trip gauge as the gas gauge until the light turns off is my guess? This is how the other bike finally turned off the wink and returned to normal. Try that.

Singed,
NOLTT

The day it decided to flash was how long? This was just recently, correct?

Wolfy, you sucked me into that one. Come back and raise terror and oh yeah, use the 14 to do it. Funny boy!

When you ride this, do you let the gas run low? Run all the bars down, etc? We want to try and trigger the ECU so it thinks it's always full, or topped off. Two months and still nothing?

Might just be a break in the wires between the fuel level sending unit and the ECU, if I remember correctly from having mine unplugged it shows as empty. Pull the tank off to the side, turn the bike to the on position to verify its still showing as empty. Unplug the sender and check the wires (hopefully the service manual has some readings you can check on the wires going to the ECU)

Tmac:

Know anything about volt-ohm meters, know how to use one? So, if yes, can you read a schematic electronic print?

I'm asking because, if not, you may have to learn...

I dont have an '07 14 print in front of me, but I'll make an educated guess that these "sender units" are nothing more than glorified (ADOT approved) variable resistors.

There is, generally, two or three wires. There's two if the unit is internally grounded through the sender's metal chassis, and there's three wires if the sender unit needs an external ground.

You're looking for three signals to-from the sender unit: One to ground (if need an external ground), One to battery (some positive battery switched signal, dont get too wrapped around determining where it comes from), and one going to the ECU.

You already plugged / unplugged some of the harness connectors to / from the sender unit to the rest of the cycle.

First thing to try is, find the rest of the interconnects (the sockets / plug pairs) and unplug / plug them too, looking for a loose / dirty / corroded connector. This is where you learn to read the print in the service manual, and figure out where they are located...

The other possibility is a fuse. Wiggle all the fuses in the fuse holder. You're looking for a loose / dirty / corroded connector supplying (or not, in this case) the battery voltage to the sender (and looking for it to be currently (no pun intended) missing in action.

So, crawl over the wiring and connectors for awhile, and try not to break anything.

Also, there's always the local repair shop, open for business...

Page 3-83 is the test. Now if it's the fuel pump relay, that's the piggyback black box on top of the ECU. And if you simultaneously hold the trip/mode together, see if a code [key on] 46 pops up? Could be the relay, but then again, as the suggestions stated above, wiggle some wires and unplug the unit to see if you have any type of white crustizzfuzzdust is where the contacts may not make contact with that whiteshit on it.
