Won’t start
04/27/18 7:42 PM

Hey everyone! So my bike has been parked most of the winter and I went to start it today and nothing happened. I put a new battery in it. It’s fully charged. Lights, signals, horn, ect... all work fine. I searched the site today and eliminated the kill switch. It tests fine. But nothing happens at all when I push the start button. I also tried with the kickstand up to eliminate that. Tried with clutch in and still nothing. Also checked all the fuses including the master fuse and that had no results. Bike is a 2014. Has anyone ever experienced something like this before?

Hmmm...welcome first off.Kill switch malfunctioning(maybe a wire deteriorated over the winter?)OR start switch malfunctioning.Everything else works.Did the fuel pump operate? How about mice.Any of them hangin out?If you shift to 6th,can you push the bike so the motor turns?

How about mice.

My first guess.

If you shift to 6th,can you push the bike so the motor turns?

I think you may need to go with 2nd. Pretty sure it won't go higher than that with the motor off. try for third. You might get it if you roll the bike forward carefully clutch out, then pull clutch and click it up to 3. It might go. I doubt it will go higher than that but I'd say 3rd is ok. 2nd if you need to. Find a hill. Make sure you have no codes/normal meter display, kill switch is on, kickstand up and ignition ON. Maybe use partial clutch if 2nd too harsh. If it starts, you know it has to be the starter related and not fuel or motor related. It should start if the wheel turns fast enough without locking. I would try this on a warm day after the bike sits in the sun a few hours since it is the first start of the season.

You don't want to have to do that every time you start it though.

I have heard of people taking control pod switches apart and cleaning them but seems to me that a switch would work intermittently if it was dirty or worn out. The first wire I would look at would be the one from the ground to frame on the RH side (where the battery neg also connects). A thick black wire goes underneath, behind/below throttle bodies to the starter on the LH side.

Thanks for the reply guys!!

I will look for any signs of mice or rat damage first. This could actually be a possibility since there are rats in my area.

The fuel pump does start to make its normal noise as soon as I turn the ignition on. And everything else seems to work fine too except that nothing happens when I push the start button.

Unfortunately I don't have any hills nearby to try and push start it.

I will find the starter this morning and work back from there. I'm thinking I should be able to 'jump' the starter manually through the starter solenoid and see if its functioning properly.

Unfortunately I don't have any hills nearby to try and push start it.

You can have a buddy push you but tell him to be ready to fall flat on his face if the bike jumps ahead with him pushing as hard as he can. I think you might obviate that by pulling the clutch as soon as you hear it fire off. When I have done this with a vehicle, I usually let the clutch out a half second and then pulled back in immediately ---then listen if the motor started. You won't stall it or lug at that low of a mph in 2nd or 3rd gear or higher if you pull the clutch back in right away even before you know if it started or not. If it didn't start just roll some more and pop the clutch again. If that won't do it, let it turn over repeatedly, clutch out and hope your buddy doesn't bite the dirt. If you feel 3 or 4 compressions and it won't start, that probably means it's a motor or fuel problem

but almost defonitely, it's an electrical problem. The starter is not turning. If you can roll start it, the starter is still not going to turn. ...but you will know the motor and fuel are fine if it roll starts.

Kickstand down with the bike in gear?

... or maybe the bike thinks the kickstand is down, with the bike in gear?

It is possible one of those switches are stuck--or both. both are a simple plunger switch. The kickstand gets a lot of gunk running onto it from the sprocket.

Yep...those switches can fail.

Question...I know you say it's fully charged. What are the volts reading on the display?Anything less than say about 12.4 or so,it isn't gonna fire.Or crank. That's what I remember about mine.

I just checked mine...display shows 12.5 volts.Hit the starter.It cranked 2 times and that was it.Anything less it probably won't crank.Definitely won't start.It's been on a batterytender all winter.
