2 cooling fans
02/09/12 7:12 PM

I decided to add a 2nd fan to my 2010 ZX14. I did a lot of seaching for installation which helped me alot.
I decided to go with a Concours right side fan thinking I could save time not having to modify anything.
I pulled my radiator today and was suprised that the concours right side fan is smaller than the left side
fan. Same part # except there is a ( A ) after the 59502 59502A for left and right. Doesnt say anywhere that it
is smaller. When you read the fan motor numbers 12V ##### 60 on left fan and 12v ##### 30 on right. I wonder if anyone has a 08+ Concours and knows what size breaker is on it. I read to increase to 20 amp for added draw but I have a feeling the Concours has 15 amp. I might just change to a 20amp to be safe. I added aluminum tabs to the right side of the radiator for mounting. I thought about the expoxy method but I guess I am too stubborn. I MIG welded the tabs
to the rails edge and they seem to be very strong. I hope to finish it tomorrow but I will take pictures. I plan to wire them together so they come on to help cool it down. I dont think I am sold on water wetter or engine ICE yet so new stock stuff is going back in or maybe low tox prestone still thinking. Hope to have pictures up by this weekend also have all new factory fairings going on matte black 08 color but all black.

Hello BlackZX14, I'm not sure what the technical details are around this mod but just as a precaution make sure you research the proper size fuse for this application. Increasing the amp rating in the circuit could cause you problems with overloading the rest of your electrical system. Just a thought, the last thing you want to do is melt something.

lytnin,
I like the size of your 2nd fan it looks like it will cool faster. The setup I have is whats on the Kawasaki Concours.

Thanks Blakezx14,
I am going to take my time and research the fuse thing. Bike is up for winter and have a few months to get it sorted. I hope to find out what the Concours has for a fan fuse. I am betting it`s a 15 amp but need to confirm this. I am going to do 1 mod at a time to see what will bring the temp down a bit.

From another (old) post:

I installed a second fan from Schnitz Racing and wired it into the primary fan in parallel. So the fans still connect with the OEM connector. Didn't bother with a relay or change the fuse.

Everything has worked perfectly for two riding season and its still going strong.

Why 2 fans? Mine is almost 5yrs old and no fender mod or anything just water and antifreeze and no problems. Of course the bike doesn't idle in traffic much it's not meant for that.

Lots of us have traffic to contend with, and high ambient temps with high humidity. All of which drive the coolant temperature up.

As for what KHI intended the ZX14 for, I don't think you can back that statement up. Clearly it is a street bike, and is intended to be the baddest thing on the streets. It goes ok outside the cities on the rural roads too, but not as well as a ZX10R (though infinitely more comfortable).

I do most of my riding in the sick Appalachian and Alleghany mountain chain that run from South Carolina and Alabama up into the northeast. So I have a lot of hairpins, and tight sweepers, and switchbacks, and in the summer it is over 95 degrees up there while the gears are getting worked up and down between first and third, with an occasional fourth gear for a few seconds.

That kind of riding runs the cooland temp up really good.

And while you may not notice the heat, a whole lot of members of this forum have, as SEARCH will confirm.

Changing to CT-Duals exhaust system, and having it ceramic coated, helped a lot. Keeping it running a little rich helps some. Putting the ZX10R front fender on helped, but requires a radiator guard since a lot more stones etc. hit that area after the fender change. The dual fans dropped my ZX14 an average of 1 bar across the board.

Which is a good thing.

Why not use the dual system that comes with the new 2012?

I can see using the fan for the 12 model as long as all the other parts are attached. Don't confuse heat on your legs with the engine running at a proper temp. I added some insulation on the right side where it used to cook my leg now it's not too bad.

I added the 2nd fan just so it would kool down kwicker. Still comes on at the same temp and goes off at the same temp but just does not stay on forever.
I think I went to a 5 amp higher fuse and even at nite when they kick on the lights don't dim. May not of needed a 2nd fan if I would have put an actual temp guauge on to see what it was really doing because I believe the bar graf may get one more worried than need be.

Nobody is. In my case, note I only refer to the temperature gauge.

If you don't spend much time in traffic you're ok. When you're stock in Austin traffic and it's 100 degrees your leg gets toasted real good. Plus I don't like it when my engine temp is at max for a long period. Engine ice and the full system helped though. She doesn't stay at max too long but when summer comes here in TX, I think I'll install that second fan.

RE: 2 cooling fans

The question always enters my mine is WHY there is 2 fans in the Concours and only one on the ZX14. Same engine and frame the Concours is for touring driving slower with more weight. Is the issue to save wieght? I dont know how hot Concours run but my issue with cooling is I ride up in the mountains of VT and NH sometimes NY and to Canadian border. In between the mountains are small little towns that are tourist attractions that we need to pass through. The slow traffic and heat going through these towns I dont want to overheat and get stuck 200 to 300 miles away from home.
The Concours has 2 fans leftside 7.5" rightside 5.5" The new ZX14R has 2 fans and better cooling fins, my bike runs hot and has one fan. That was pretty much my reason to add another.

I have used the Schnitz Racing second fan, installed last summer... No radiator removal, no welding, no more toasted leg, no problems since... Wired parallel to original fan as per instructions. Also added Water Wetter to radiator. She runs cool even in traffic in the DF Dub during summer! Had 10 days straight over 100 and she ran great!

The Schnitz fan is about as big as the stock unit and ducted, so it moves a lot of air...

Hey Bigwilliezx, I went to Schnitz site and they say their fan is for '06-'10...any reason to think it wouldn't fit the '11? Is the mounting thru the fins good n secure? How heavy is it? Looks like a good choice. Guess I'm a little concerned about using the radiator fins to support it if it's heavy.

What about this one, 1/2 inch thinner, more cfm's and alot cheaper. Actually it looks like the same fan.

Hey scottfarm they do look almost exactly alike.. I wanna put another fan on my 14 as well. So if I can get confirmation that the one you posted thats looks almost the same will work just like Schnitz Racing second fan I definiely getting it ASAP before it gets hot here in Philly. If sum1 can confirm I would appreciate it.

Mad5674 - the fan is not that heavy, maybe 2 lbs IF that. I was a little concerned about using the fins to hold it, but I have a couple of zip ties that actually support the weight of it, the little things that go thru the fins actually only keep it on the radiator. It's been on there thru some bumpy stuff (some of the roads in my area SUCK), but it's still nice and secure and the radiator shows no signs or wear. It should fit the 11' models just fine (same bike) so I don't see any probs there. It is a VERY tight fit though with the CT Duals full system header, but if you mount it high on the radiator, you should just have a cunt hair's worth of space between the header and the fan...

Just a bit of info I wanted to add. The top and bottom channel of the radiator is just the frame that holds the tanks together in a curve. There is no cooling tubes that run through it. Thats why I was comfortable welding to it. I even used a mig spoolgun. Tig welding would have been the better choice for more precise welds but the mig did fine. Just thought I would mention my thoughts to welding on such an expensive little radiator! I bet you could also rivot some "L" shaped tabs but would damage a couple fins but that wouldnt hurt any cooling properties of the rad. Good luck with any method you use!

The Ebay fan that Scottfarm found seems like it's about the same thing as the Schnitz fan, but loads cheaper! The Schnitz fan set up is the same, the only difference I see is that the Schnitz fan blades are curved, but other than that looks virtually the same... will prob work just as good especially if it's thinner than the Schnitz unit!
