Broken Fairing!!
05/21/09 11:39 PM

My 14 just fell over on my garage floor while idling to warm up while I was getting my gear on. Not sure how that happened but she's got some damage on the main and side fairing including scrapes and a couple cracks. Looks like I need some new plastics pieces.

Can they be ordered with the factory colors or do you have to buy them blank and have them painted?

The fairing is molded plastic that is already that color. So you have to order whatever color your bike is.

Well that's good news that they come in factory colors, saves paint matching. Off to the dealer today to check out pricing.

Boofa, thanks for the offer, I'll see what the dealer can do and try to figure out the best option. ARe you able to fix cracks in the plastic?

I understand that there is a discount available at Bike Bandit for AMA members. The discount may save you more than the $30 or so AMA membership would cost. -bg

Hey, awesome tips, I've already checked prices on Bike Bandit and they ship to Canada. This is a great option if my local dealer is ridiculous.

Thanks a ton Guys, that's a huge help!!!!

This should be a lesson to you new 14 owners. The side stand on the 14 sucks. It does "NOT" lock in place like other motorcycle side stands. So "ALWAYS" make sure the front of the bike is facing uphill. If not, it will roll off it and cost you hundreds of dollars to fix.

Mine fell over in the driveway right off the truck when I got it home 0 miles , that sucked and it cost $467 new for the mid and lower fairing and that is without decals or padding for the inside. I used a razor blade and sliced the foam off the old pieces to save a couple of bucks and just contact cement them back on.

Try http://www.ronayers.com/ Usually have the best prices.

If just parking, try always keeping it in gear, wont roll forward provided you take the forward slack out first.

There is a fix for the kickstand.Look at the stop on the fixed kickstand stop at the front, File or use whatever method and remove some metal on the fixed part to allow the kickstand to pivot foward further.
I did this on my 06.
I always park mine in 1st gear and let it roll fwd as far as it will go before leaning it over onto the stand.Almost dropped it at the dragstrip early on.
My 08 allows the stand farther FWD so it seems.

Sorry to hear about your bike.
One thing I never do is let the bike run unless I'm on it. I've heard a few similar stories and I don't want to be one of them. It's easy to be in a hurry or forget something and leave the bike running but things like this can happen.

Hope I'm not too late to jump into this....... I checked prices on BikeBandit and one of the other ones. You can beat those at MRCycles.com - reason I know is I've got $700+ worth of plastic on the way from them now. Fell over in my driveway :(

One of the habits I hardwired into my brain on any motorcycle is to follow this checklist EVERY time you park:

- Push kickstand out, making sure it is all the way out (visually).
- When you get off bike, you slightly turn the wheel to the left and swing your leg over while pulling back on the bars.
- When you are off the bike, you grab the bars and pull the bike back onto the kickstand with a pretty aggressive yank. On a hard surface, you should hear the scrape or squeak. On anything softer, you will dig in.

There are all sorts of situations where you have to be inventive when parking a bike. Obviously it is necessary to put the bike in 1st gear, pull it back onto the compression of the engine, and then perform the above steps. Parking on various kinds of slopes can be EXTREMELY tricky - just remember that it is always better to lean too much than not enough.

If you have trouble with parking stability, grind down the shoe as suggested above. On my ZRX this was a serious necessity (wind could knock it over), I find the ZX-14 is pretty good about how it 'sits' on the triangle.

One last note - there are other factors besides the above that can complicate things. If you park your bike where there are kids around, you may need to lean more - either through grinding mount or having a small depression where the kickstand sits. If you often park in places with soft ground, asphalt that can melt, etc, then carry a parking puck or a crushed pop can on you.

I feel for you guys who have had these horrible incidents happen to you, and I hate to say this - I really do, but... There is no excuse for dropping a bike.

Don't feel bad, Ell, I had somewhat the same problem just to a lesser degree.

My 08 was all of about 3 weeks old, and one morning I rolled it out onto the driveway from the garage to go to work.

Just didn't kick the kickstand all the way down, and let her lean onto the stand to put my jacket and helmet on. Just as I took my hand off the clipon, the kickstand "collapsed" (sprang back up into riding position).

I keep her from slamming over, but just barely, and she got so far over I had to lower her the rest of the way. I kicked my jacket under where the belly cowling was coming down, and gently set her down.

Had to reach under and grab the footpeg bracket and rear frame strut and deadlift her back upright.

Fortunately all it did was put a slight scratch on the mirror and underside of the exhaust cannister.

Ever since then, I make sure its in gear and that the kickstand is all the way down.
