Sprockets
08/14/16 2:32 PM

Ijust changed my chain and sprockets on my 08 zx14 and I did one down on the front and one up on the back, I hooked up the speedoturner but have not calibrated it yet, At a low speed my bike feels like it wants to accelerate then slow down(jump) when I'm at a steady speed, anyone know what the problem is?

Take the aftmarkt part off or pull the hot wire off. Are the symptoms gone?

I'm not sure I'm understanding your explanation of the problem. Do you mean the bike accelerates at low speed up to say 40 mph but then the speed actually goes down to say 30 mph after the rpm levels off? If so, does the speedo verify this? The tachometer would also react to reduction in wheel speed. You would hear the rpm level off and then run slower if the bike was slowing down. I kind of doubt changing sprockets and chain could cause this. I would suspect a fuel issue more than anything. Of course, the first thing to try as Hub said would be disconnect the speedotuner inline plugs and plug the OEM speed sensor/wire back up OEM. I doubt a speedo adjuster would cause this either but might as well try it to eliminate that as the cause.

I also have an 08 with Speedohealer and 45 rear .17 front. Never noticed this problem. Not having the speedo adjuster calibrated could make the speedo indicate slower but it won't actually make the bike move slower.

...or do you mean the speedo indicates acceleration but then jumps a few mph slower after the speed stabilizes? I could see a speedo adjuster causing that to happen. Make sure the inline plugs are not wet. I did have a major issue with that one time after washing the bike. The speedo went to about 150 mph when I was doing about 35 and the bike ran horrible. There is no ground with a speedo adjuster so that could not be it.

Personally, I'd stick to the Speedohealer or Bonneville Pro. I've heard of problems with lower priced speedo adjusters. Not a whole lot but a few.

when I am going 20, 30, or 40 mph not hwy speed. It feels like I am hitting the throttle and then letting off over and over again. I am hitting the throttle at all just to maintain speed

The bike runs in a jerky fashion? That is what happened to mine. I would have never guessed it was the Speedohealer if the speedometer hadn't went crazy at the same time this happened. The bike started to run normally after a couple minutes but the speedo needle went to 0 even with the bike moving. This was right after washing with a garden hose. The bike ran fine and speedo functioned normally after parked for a few hours. I image the hot engine dried the water out.

I never again washed the bike with a garden hose and this event has never repeated itself in 5 years. I have ridden in heavy rain a couple times and still no problem. The inline connectors are taped up to seal them now. I can only assume it was the direct spray of water. In your case, if you have not washed the bike, I would guess it was simply a defect in the Speedotuner causing the same problem I had. Try connecting back to OEM.

99% of the time when something is different after you laid hands on the machine, the difference (good or bad) is due to something you did (or didn't do correctly).
