Purchasing a used ZX14 Turbo
07/24/19 10:16 AM

Well I am back after a few years of laying dormant. I sold my '06 ZX14 and have recently been looking for another. I came across an ad on craigslist that just happened to be for a turbo ZX14. It wasn't quite advertised as a turbo bike, but after reading it more carefully and talking to the guy, it is. He has owned it for 8 years and said it runs great with no issues. 9K on the clock and he is willing to take $5K for it. I sold my '06 with 6k on it for $4500 and it was beat so I am thinking I can make a little money of this thing if anything.

Is there anything I should particularly look/check out while I am checking it out? I've owned 30+ motorcycles so they aren't new to me but never had a turbo one.

What's it like to ride a ZX14? It's like riding a 1000cc bike... but with 400 more cc's.

Do a leak down test...to me, this is a necessity when buying a turbo bike
Find out what brand kit is on it and if the CR was lowered.
Sounds like a hell of a buy if it isn't a junk.

When I've bought expensive toys such as this I've pulled an oil sample and sent it to Blackstone labs for material analysis. They will analyse for materials, metals and fluids that should not be in there under normal conditions. As well as the comp and probably a leakdown test for a boosted lump

Both the boat with a pair of 454 big blocks and the 911 were oil tested and 20 yrs later the 911 is still running great - sold the boat but never had an engine problem that wasn't the normal boat shit to deal with

Good luck, sounds like a fun toy if its solid
