Cold start miss
04/18/22 5:35 PM

My bike has recently developed a cold start miss. I live in Michigan. I start the bike and it burbles and seems to run on 3 cyclinders until it starts to build heat, then it comes on like a light switch. I'm wondering if its a coil. I'll start with finding the cold header. Can't see it being a plug.

What are the most common causes for misfire with these bikes? Bike is tuned (Guhl) 5,500 miles.

Thanks, Kurt

The mileage is 5,500 total or on the flash. Start the bike, run it for less than two seconds. Touch every header pipe till you feel a cold one. Swap any spark stick to change with cold cylinder. Start again. Same pipe stay cold? Then it not the spark stick, but the plug.

Change plugs, or you came up with another cold pipe, then it's the spark stick.

Thanks Hub,

5,500 miles total. It's a cream puff. I bought it late last year, rode it once or twice and snow came.

It's definitely #1 cylinder. I used an IR temp unit. I'll look at plugs, sparkstick and all connections.

Is it common for this model to foul plugs? Sparkstick replacement this soon? I know there are two things that break, old and new, but I really thought this bike would be pretty trouble free. I will figure it out. I have to say I really like the bike.

The secret to a bulletproof, trouble free bike (any bike) is to keep it bone stock. Any mod from then are all bets are off. Thus the flash, not stock pipe, etc.

I haven't seen a code. Wouldn't know how to read one? Is it obdII based?

Codes on the 14 are blinking coolant bar, fuel bar blinks on and off, shift number window locks to a 6, ABS light stays on. Not obd per say, meaning, like a car and you take tool to download codes. Kawi dealers have a hand held, but is not a 9 or 12-? prong plugin.

Pull the plugs, check the tune that way. Reinstall with new iridiums. Shoot all 4 plugs and show the porcelain nose tips. Threads should be dry.

Nice looking bike.

Front end strapped down, quick shifter and looks like a NOS tank strapped to the rear.

Sounds like the bike hasn't been ridden in 6-8 months?

Did you park with a fresh full tank of fuel? and some stabilizer added?

Hopefully not E85 or something?

I doubt bad plug or bad coil stick.

I'm thinking fueling issue, bad gas, plugged up injector or maybe even
a rat chewed on some wires while stored.

You'll just have to dig into it and it.

These bikes are very dependable, should run for many years
with no issues and just normal maintenance.

Parked with stabil, non-ethanol fuel. That small tank is C02 for the shifter. I am suspect of the ignition unit that is tied into air shifter. It's hooks into plug #1. I'll get after it this weekend. Appreciate the help. Kurt

Coils usually fail when they get hot. I had one that was good one day, next day it was a 3 cylinder

It was the plug. Funny thing though. The bike has a total of 5,600 miles.(Did 100 yesterday) The plugs in the bike are NGK CR9E, not the factory iridiums. Found the factory set in a box that came with the bike. The electrode was slightly worn. I was surprised given the low miles. Runs like a top. Thanks, Kurt.

Perhaps it's just a fluke. I don't hear of plgs wearing out on these bikes. Mine were all still working at somethong like 40 thousand miles, never changed until then.

The strange thing is the electrode wear. It shouldn't have been worn down with such limited use.

Maybe the NKG CR9E plugs are not new but used.

How many miles on the Bike when you bought it?

More then likely the PO was running NOS

I'm not a nitrous expert, but....

Typically NOS users will swap out Iridium plugs for a softer core plug.

NOS can/will erode electrodes/plugs quickly due to the quick, lean, hot combustion.

Iridiums are changed out every 7,500mi. I extended the plugs to 15k when I set the valves. The change was short of an amazing difference. 'Toned Crip' was the tune. Can't believe the response of a fresh set of plugs, but it only lasted for a few weeks. Call me nuts

Don't change it with any different numbered designated plug... or you'll miss it.
