In mid-west states, use of laser from the air is becoming more common, so they can just generate the tickets on the go, so to speak.
The laser also allows them to target the plate, and take a photo through a near-military grade camera.
At night they are starting to use low-light amplification and the laser is enough to light the plate up for a photo.
This will become commonplace during this decade.
And it will go active in places that have been traditionally "safe to speed" zones without warning, just like normal photo-radar has done.
I am happy to go 10 over most of the time, except in work and school zones, where photo-radar and cop cars with laser won't cut you any slack. There are times I go more than 10 over like passing, or way out in the sticks. They can't photograph my plate because I have 4 coats of PhotoBlocker on it, so photo-radar doesn't slow me down anymore. It flashes at me and I never get a letter like the first one I got.
I considered a radar detector, but most of the cops in my part of the country use laser now, and by the time a detector alerts you to laser, they've already scanned your speed. There are a couple good jammers, but getting caught with an electronic jammer is good for at least a 1 year suspension of license and $1,000 fine.
But like I said many times before, when I was young I went stupid fast all the time. Its just harder to do it now, and getting harder every year as military technology trickles down to the police electronics industry.
