zx-14 vs Busa...Benchrace
07/29/11 1:58 PM

I came accross a dyno test between a stock 08 zx14 and a stock 08 Busa. Same dyno, same day, same guy running the dyno. Both bikes had very similar miles. The Busa pulled 172hp and the zx did 170hp. Here is my issue. I surf forums a lot and occasionally enter the busa forums and read them raving about how the busa is the "King!" I'm afraid I don't understand their math. That 2 hp makes it the King? Even though the said "King" weighs 26lbs more? I dont think so. Power to weight it is still behind the big ninja. But lets go for all or nothing. It is pretty widely accepted that Kawi has a better ram air system than Suzuki. Sportrider did a ram air test on several bikes proving that it can add significant horsepower through the entire range. The Honda Blackbird went from 115hp to 122hp at peak with air being forced down the intakes. I'm sorry but I think the busa is an overhyped, overmarketed second place to the zx. But let me say that the two are so close that I wouldn't dare to say the zx is the King of the hyperbikes(lets leave the Bavarians out of this), because at this distance the rider makes all the difference.

The 14 is more raw the busa is more refined. I like them both. Had an opportunity to play wit a piped gen 1 busa against my stock 08 14. I stuck right with him. I'm sure we were both holding back. I don't think he wanted to go faster and I could see passing would be a battle that was too dangerous for me. It was very cool watching another rider drop a knee going through a big corner at 130.wellllllllllll now I have had both for 2 years and stock vs stock there's not much difference----

A busa? You know...that bike from Suzuki....the one that has "peregrine falcon" written all over the fairings. The 14 Killa. That one.The one with the factory steering damper so they wouldn't get sued from people wreckin their bikes due to poor design (I didn't say that).

I gotta say in response to the Rookster...I truly believe that the Busa actually has a better fitment design quality....I can't say though for a long term shootout.Mine was..."beautifully" put together...yes.It has over time displayed a tad bit of,well, not "quite so immaculate" as it was at first. But VERY livable still. The 14 is "raw"...hmm,I'd say.....wickedly angled to cut through the air and blast it's way to the front.Me likes...I get more and more surprised with every ride. She's a badazz bird that's for sure.

very well said. I meant raw in a good way.. I like raw. the stock busa feels so tame I almost think it is a......

HONDA.

But it's a great bike. It's cool to feel the delicatness and precision of the busa. The 14, I say it is edgy. They both are really safe bikes. The comparison means nothing if you want to start comparing them with other sport bikes.

here's a busa

Dont get me wrong, I love the suzi. And honestly I could never tell the difference in performance. I bought a zx because I see a lot of busas and I wanted something different. My point is that it is a gross overstatement to call it "king". of course that is now a title held by BMW.

Brock Davidson likes the Hyabusa. A lot. They race them. He did a program with the ZX14 to develop parts and services to sell for it. Actually raced it. But then went right back to the busa.

Wonder why? Hub?

Priv, I have no clue? I can only assume that bike is Brock's bread and butter for a good decade. The other is parts. The main thing might be how quick the bike can be built thru rounds. Sort of like having a cassette gearbox where a few bolts and out the whole transmission comes out to work on. No splitting of cases. Since the transmissions are stout, the next worry would be the top end caving in.

Sure, you could pop both heads, look down the cylinder walls as far as you can, but you can't see the piston skirt. Drop the sump, split the case, but having that barrel to bore or to fit a billet between the OEM is more that kind of power gain. Sure, you can bore the 14, but there are no over sized pistons like the old days. The freshen up on this 14 package is to buy a set of pistons with the new lined bored empty case all sized for said pistons in the production fit, not a more, 'you control the cut' of the "blueprint."

I would imagine his vast knowledge with the Busa has more time to the Suz power plant, than start all over with a 14 or the bmw, being that more can afford the Big4 than having to work on that special factor tool kind of beemer just to take it apart in the pits [I would imagine] is the assumption on that bar to jump. I'm more waiting for kawi to address that issue with cash waiting...

While we're young..... Kawi!!!!

haven't ridden my poor busa in a long time. dam I t's still a great bike. don't get me wrong.....just the 14 has something special about it and it always did from day 1. I think that is the only way to pick between them if you are torn like i was. ask yourself which one do you like better even before you ride them both---and that is all there is to the decision. It's really simple. they are too close to pick favs. No big mystery.

I took mine over to Twigg Cycles yesterday because they had an open house.

Wouldn't have mattered if it had been a ZX14 or Hyabusa or Honda Shadow, when the calendar girls were washing it, it was all good.

You know what was funny, though. I was like 5th in line. They really did a good job washing the big baggers but when they got to mine it was like they were afraid to touch it. WTF ? The service manager was there, rolling bikes into and out of the washing and drying tents. I think one of them asked if there was any place not to get water or something.

LOL.

Busa...14 it's all the same, comes down to which one you like best..they're all bloody fast. That "King" garbage is just magazine hype like with the BMW. I sat on a Beemer S1000RR this weekend and was not really all that impressed. I have five bikes in my garage right now and belong to five different forums. On every one, the forum members all believe their bike is the best, that BS gets tiring. Which is "Best", my ZX-14 or my ZX-6R? Short answer... it depends, no one bike can do it all, they have overlapping areas of competence. Some rides I prefer the ZX-14, others, the ZX-6R, neither is "better" and I think both are great. It's the freakin rider that makes up 90% of the equation, especially when there is a bend in the road so we need to just ride what we have and enjoy.

I have 5 bikes and a couple more if we count the wifes. My beemer is a nice cruiser as is my 14 and 2 of my ZRX's are 1/4 mile playtoyz and still very streetable and the 3 ZRX is a cruiser then the wifes 919 may only be a 100 hp but it is fun and lite.
I also love to ride other peoples bikes just to see what I am missing so I am not dedicated to any brand buts I do loves my toyz.

BTW if the Hayabusa is "King" how come a stock 2011 ZX-10R with an ECU flash lays down 5 to 10 more rear wheel HP and is 150 lbs lighter? 150 freakin pounds..that's worth another 20 HP and that's before you ever hit a curve in the road where the bike has to actually turn.

When it comes to riding, I wish I were a foot shorter and 75 pounds lighter. That 10R and I would make a great team. Had to go with the one that fits me best..different strokes for different folks..

One advantage the busa holds over the 14 is it's far greater availability of aftermarket parts/mods, and a longer history of development for same, if hot rodding is the priority. But for it's size, it's ergos were surprisingly tight for me.

To me, the most significant post in this thread came from Rook. He owns both, and the busa sits in the garage..
