ABS OR NO ABS
04/22/14 6:41 PM

HEY GUYS, MY NAME IS ALEX AND IM BRAND NEW TO THE FORUM. JUST PURCHASED A 2013 ZX14R WHITE. WHICH IS MY 4TH ZX14. I BOUGHT THE BIKE OFF CRAIGSLIST AND ASKED SPECIFICALLY IF THE BIKE WAS EQUIPPED WITH ABS. SELLER SAID YES AND I DROVE FROM FLAGSTAFF, AZ TO PHOENIX, AZ TO PICK UP THE BIKE AND WHILE I WAS THERE I CALLED THE LOCAL MOTORCYCLE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED HOW I COULD MAKE SURE THE BIKE HAD ABS. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS A DISC INSIDE THE ROTOR WITH NOTCHES IN IT AND IF IT HAS THE DISC THEN THE BIKE HAS ABS. I TESTED THE BRAKES THE OTHER DAY ON A RIDE GOING ABOUT 20 MPH AND GRABBED THE BRAKES AND THE FRONT TIRE LOCKED UP. SO DOES THE REAR. SO AFTER ALL THAT I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO TELL IF A NEW ZX14 HAS ABS OR NOT. THANKS

ALEX

All the second gen have the discs with notches, both ABS and non ABS. It's used for both ABS and traction control so that's a bad way to determine if its ABS or not. It should say ABS right on the front fender right along with K-trc.

There are 2 steel brake hoses coming out under the forward top beauty cover that sits over the top frame.
The steering neck's right side is very busy with these hoses going down the front steering neck to the front brakes.

There are dealer sales people that do not study the brochures of the models they sell.
There is a sticker on the side of the front fender that says 'K-Skid' only or it says, 'K-skid with ABS.'
There are your two outside key areas that show/say if it has ABS or not.

Removing the battery will show the ABS brain box next to the battery.
Removing the right grill cover to expose the battery, peek down the battery with a flashlight. If it's empty behind the battery = No ABS.

I thought I had the magic wand working just fine... Ah, there it goes...

Dealer: Somebody stole those hoses and made wands out of them. Still want the bike?

The bright side is I still own an amazing bike. The machine is amazing! Way faster then my previous three ZX14's. Abs was just a plus

Forgive me if I am missing something... but I have to know.

Does it have it? or not? lol. Guessing - not?

and congrats, they are amazing machines. I am blown away by mine, every time I ride.

Cant imagine anything smoother, with as much effortless thrust.

Rod.

You will get a yellow light on the left instrument display...it shows your ABS is up and running. As soon as you travel several feet...it will go out.Are you getting this...and Hub is right...there should be a sticker on the fender designating "KTRC/ABS"I thought the white ones had it...I may be wrong. If she's locking either wheel...she doesn't have ABS..the tone wheel is primarily for KTRC....but doubles as an ABS sensor. If you paid for an ABS model...you need to get what you paid for...regardless.
