My Latest Turbo Project
07/14/09 7:19 AM

Hey again... haven't had much time at home to catch up on photos and stuff, but here's the short of it. As some may now know, I sold my CL kit to Badinblack. I kept turning the boost up and up, and eventually hurt things... So, while the engine was apart, decided to fully build it and then go BIG. Ended up with a really tight/sealed bottom end with Falicon goodies, 9.5 JE's w/ ceramic on top and teflon on sides... all the good stuff. Anyway, this build was done by John Fernandez of Acme Racing. Those of you that may follow AMA drag racing... John is the rider of the Chris Jones Performance turbo 14, that has won every Super Street race this season. Chris is the designer of this kit, and I knew these guys could build a solid bike that could make big power. After riding one of Chris's Real Street bikes, with a 3071r turbo, I knew that's what I wanted. Believe it or not, the power comes on real smooth and linear... diff. than what I expected. So I ended up going with the Garrett 3582r with one of the larger A/R exhausts.... .82 I think. Now my traditional thinking made me worry this was going to be a totally lazy lagger on the bike. Everyone assured me that this would spool just as quick as the 3071r on a 14. The extra cc's really do make a difference. Also, engine tune and cam setup comes into play as well. One of the theories is that the while the larger exhaust housing should make it spool slower, and it does I suppose, it also chokes up the 14 less when it's off boost. All I do know is that this bike runs great off boost, even low comp., and when it spools up, between 5-5,500rpm depending on gear, it moves out. And this has only been my experience on spring pressure... like 5.5psi while I'm "breaking" it in. Haven't gotten it over 9K yet, but feels like it's really, really going to pull up top, right where I want it. I'll try to get some pics and vids up. Feel free to ask any questions anytime. It may take me a little bit to respond, but I always do. Here's a primer...

Tommy, just wondering what kind of hp & torque #'s are expected from a set up like this ? Also, are you planning to keep the stock wheel base. Oh ya, and the most important how much longer till she is broke in ? Can't wait to hear your report ........

Hey man,
No numbers on her yet for two reasons. 1.Dyno broke(the stack) 2.Breaking it in. have a few miles on her now, and ready to tune in the upper range as soon as the dyno is fixed. It feels strong... much cooler boost with big turbo. If I had to guess, the 4, maybe 5 psi I've seen, feels like 230... maybe 240ish. Dunno really. It's all different really. Going to have 2 maps. One tame, for all pump gas, and then a second, more violent tune that runs with a meth injection kit. I really don't think 325-350 on meth inj. is unreasonable, however it will be tuned on the safe side. Waiting on new boost controller now, and going to try boost-by-gear... keep it streetable. YES, I'm keeping it stock height and length for now... I like the twisties as well. So I'll be limited a bit when I go for those 1 mile LSR blasts, but it'll be awesome none the less.

So far I love it on the street, and haven't really beat it yet. No oil, no issues. Just runs great. With injectors, c16, and piggyback, this setup could make 550rwhp all day long. I would love to do an intercooler some day....

Numbers to come. As a side note, my father and I actually run a sensor company that specializes in egt's and temp probes for all engine apps... mostly racing stuff. I want to eventually log egts, as well as charge temps before and after the meth injection. I really wish I could have logged charge temps on the old turbo to compare... but I had no intentions on really turning that boost up, as it was perfect as a stage 1. Stay tuned...

Tommy your new set-up sounds awesome I think it'll only be a matter of time tho before you stretch that thing some I plan on leaving mine stock length and height for now too...but I'm not ruling out at least bolt on extensions down the road lol.
What breather set-up did you have on your bike when you ran the kit I have? I'm just using the stock breather line....I went down abit in hose diameter, but ran it up along the side of the bike under the plastic, and it exits at the tail. Not sure what to expect blowby wise with this set-up tho...

If it's sealed up tight... you shouldn't really have more than just a little vapor now and then... nothing dripping or spraying out for sure. BUT, in the event you do get blow-by, you don't want it coming out all over your bike, tires, etc. I ran a hose up front under the left RAC, and it's in this little breather tank: http://www.pitstopusa.com/detail.aspx?ID=10885

As far as stretching it... only reason to do that is if I'm going for every last 1/10th in the quarter or mile. For street riding, there is no reason. The boost-by-gear will make it so it's making the perfect amount for every gear...

Seeeeeeeeeee
