Looking for a good work light.
11/13/18 1:20 AM

Any suggestions for a good work light? Since I need glasses for working up close, I need something BRIGHT too. Something that would help with doing close up work such as checking valve clearances, etc. I'd prefer AC powered or re-chargeable battery type. From what I've been reading, LED is a good choice? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. The company's name is "Tac Light"? Can you give the model number? Thanks.

Anyone else have suggestions on a good light?

Thanks for the reply, Bad. Last question: about how long do the batteries last? Thanks.

+1 for a good head light like posted above. I've also found these very handy. D loop on one end, hook on the other end, magnets on the back and its foldable.

I did some research and read a number of reviews on head lamps about 6 months ago ... thinking there must be something better out there than the Home Depot el cheap-O's that don't last very long ... buttons wear out, elastic dies quick, just overall poor quality. Oh, and many have different modes that I don't care anything about like strobe or red, and that force me to toggle past those modes I'm never gonna use.

I settled on the Black Diamond "Spot" model. At $30 it is probably twice the price of a big box one (think I got it for $25 or $26), but it has a nice comfortable elastic band, its button feel like quality, it tilts up and down nicely, and it's easy to toggle between spot beam and flood, but only if you want to*. It's water proof. It takes 3 AAA batteries, so I keep a little box of rechargeable AAA's and swap them out pretty often because I use the light A LOT.

* If you set the head lamp to spot beam, then turn it off and on it will stay in the spot beam mode. When it's on, you can do q quick double-click to toggle to flood, and it will stay in that mode until you double click. I only care about the spot beam, so for me it's always only 1 click to turn on and 1 click to turn off. It actually does have red and strobe modes, but those take a series of double or triple clicks or something, and again since I never use those I don't even care what it takes to turn them on!

extrapolator: I think I'll try the BD Spot. My main reason for buying it is when I check my valve clearances for the first time, I'll need something bright. I wear basic reading glasses when doing up close work and have decent lighting in the garage, but when I try to see things all crammed together under the tank, I can't see well enough. Is this light plenty bright for this work? The main complaint on the Spot was some said they see a yellow spot in the center of the lighting. I assume this yellow spot is seen while trail hiking or things at some distance and not during close up work?
I'm also buying a charger so I should be set. Thanks for any help on my question.

Bad, 1wheelpeel, thanks for the replies. My main reason for not trying the Bell&Howell is the BD Spot is lighter and I'm thinking more comfortable. I don't really want to wear anything on my head but I agree the headlight idea is better than a hanging or standing light. Thanks for the headlight recommendation as I was looking at only standard work/shop lighting.

This is the light I've been using, its incredibly bright and isn't hot like the halogen work lights.

KAK - I actually bought two of the BD Spot so I could keep one in the house and one in my truck, and YES one of them does have that faint yellow-ish spot ... sorry, I had forgotten about that. It doesn't actually bother me, since it's very faint, but it is there and there is a chance it could bother you. The other one doesn't have it at all. I'd say if you're using it in the woods or something non-technical you wouldn't notice it, or even if you do you wouldn't care. But if you're doing something technical then maybe it would bother you, although I kinda doubt it.

I like mine so much I bought my dad one too. I'll ask him today if his has the yellow spot.

Sigh ... nothin' out there is perfect, is it?

Could be! I note though that Amazon's ratings for yours is 3.7 / 5 (only 11 reviews) whereas the Spot is 4.4 / 5 (539 reviews) and is "Amazon's Choice", for what that's worth. Oh, and only $10 more.

I ended up buying the Energizer HDD32E at Amazon. $16, 315 lumens, very light, very simple to select light modes. I tried it on and the light is plenty bright and can be focused. The light tilts easily. Nothing to complain about. This was a Christmas gift. I'll order the Energizer NIMH Charger with AA and AAA batteries and I'll be set.
I appreciate the replies. I doubt I would've thought of a headlamp style light.
Hope we all have a healthy and prosperous New Year!
