Rook, I suspect that those bolts, like my clip-on bolts, came from the factory with Red Loctite, and might need heat to get them out without damaging them.

That may be the case. IDK how you could heat them without damaging the paint though. The factory locktite seems to stay soft like a stiff putty but those tail frame bolts have a high torque spec as you mentioned before. I have removed the clip bolts without problems. Rotor bolts, same thing. Both had the soft red locktite on them.

You are probably right about the paint damage. You might need to check with a Kawasaki dealer technician, or a salvage yard technician, who has had reason to pull the subframe off a ZX-14 (e.g. accident damage).

You see so many ZX-14 frames advertised on eBay, so obviously salvage yards are pulling the subframes off successfully somehow.

Yes. Hub also suggested heat. That might be the only way and then you repaint after. Another Hub trick -- if the hex was stretched a bit, put the correct bit in and hit it with a hammer to set it deeper in the hex. The hex has a concave bottom that will flatten down a tiny bit and give you a better bight. Haven't tried it yet. Maybe heat the bolt from the tip of the threads? That would burn the paint on the inside of the frame where it was out of sight. I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Not sure if anyone else has tried this, but I'm also planning on running cf fan brackets, and an aluminum clutch pushrod (7.91mm diameter) the ends of the pushrod need to dimpled to match the stock piece. The stock steel clutch pushrod is quite heavy.

Great ideas. the Aluminum pushrod could be done by anyone as long as they can find the right diameter aluminum rod.

ZX14r that weighs 500 lbs with one gallon of fuel.

That's my bike up there^^^without fairings.

According to what I have found online, the Gen1 was 485 dry. Grn's was 520 wet, with full tank of gas.

I've removed a/o replaced enough junk to subtract a 75 pounds for my 08 and that does not include fairings (although there are a number of fairing brackets and attached equipment that have been removed or modified). So fairings and all, my 14 is a lot lighter than 500 lbs. Only thing, I have not figured the amount of weight I have added yet. Maybe this summer I will catalogue that. My guess is less than 30 lbs of doodads, nitrous and electronics added so I'm still under 500 lbs. ....and getting lighter all the time!!

Nice looking Bike. I wonder if the Eye brow fairing would stay in place at 186mph?

Good question. It's just two bolts but that upper cowl holds the sides and lowers up for the most part. I think it would stay on by itself but I probably wouldn't try it. I can tell ya, I have problems if I do 90 without lowers. I took that LH side frame rail out so it blows around unless the lowers are there to help hold it steady. The ram covers can be problem too if the sides have been removed and that one main bolt is out.

Still no photos, Hub. All I see for each photo is a white "-" inside a white circle in a black background, which I assume means I lack access rights to that site.

Same here. white background with a little gray circle that has a minus sign in it. That's what shows in your previous post too. I'll bet it is a a conflict between that host site and this one. Maybe Incapsula if we currently have that on this site. I don't see the little Incapsula icon at the bottom of the page anymore.

Do this... mouse over the image, right click, drilldown says 'open image in new browser' or something like that and you'll see the whole pic.

Not mine. The race shop I have fun at. I'm his current nut and bolt guy. In other words, get the bikes prepped for racing or trackday... a pit crew kind of volunteer. He wants to pay me but I tell him to put it towards racing. Just hee-haw a few local races that come thru. Old farts still scratching the urge.

Sup to you, Hub. You should get payed for your skill and experience. I still get my shorts in a knot when someone asks me to do artwork for free or cheap. I'm getting over it now that I make decent money doing something else but oh there were times when I needed money and the only work I could get payed peanuts. If I do it now, I do it fast and if they don't like it, that's it, I'm done! They can fix it themselves for free!

I hear that. I'm retired so I have something to keep the hobby going I used to get paid for wink-wink. Lucky for me I can afford to buy lunch, gas to get there and home. Let's say I'm slowly depleting the bank account... you know, 'die broke' kind of, 'no pockets on a casket'. Then I have my nephew and told him to flip his bikes. He gathers the parts and I put it together, sometimes called, 'wire and fire'. Right now, I have an old race buddy and his childhood friend I pal with. For real, I said years ago, once the nephew clears the flippers off the rack, I'll get his '95 dirt bike running for nothing. This was said years ago. I try to pay but they have always paid for lunch or breakfast all this time. So right now I'm going thru his buddy's bike and reminded him not to bother paying for it. For me it's an addiction. I don't see money, I see a challenge... family or friend is as far as it goes so I hear ya. Once you walk away from something, a lot of that knowledge goes away with it. The shit I should have known I'm relearning.

Wrenching draws on a very wide range of knowledge. It's not the same as riding a bike (once you learn you never forget), I'm sure. My process for painting and drawing is a lot simpler. It was the same few techniques and principles used over and over. Now it's so hardwired, I can pick it up anytime I want and it's like I never left it. Sometimes I think I somehow got better after not doing any art for a very long time. Those paths will never go away even if I forget everything else.
