Is it spring yet?
01/16/21 12:17 PM

Well I'm just getting back at this drag racing thing.

I have to install the kill switch and get some full leathers in order to be able to run and not get hassled by the tracks here.

I'm starting with a stock bike but over the winter I'll be...
1 kill switch
2 full leathers
3 Hindle EVO full system
4 flash with a tune
5 lowering links, front strap, fork tube slide of an inch
6 rear sprocket swap probably a 40 but we will see
7 Puig race screen
8 cut stock seat

Anyone else have plans?

Mostly the busa. I've got the dog bones off now and will be putting in some nonadjustable raising links. They claim to lift the tail a whole inch which would be insane. Guess what? I forgot to take measurements before installing so I will need to put the rear wheel on and the stock links to get a before measurement. Then take it apaprt again and do the after measurement. Let me tell you, if you never took the rear suspension tie rod nuts off, it's almost scary how tight they are. The busa was worse that the 14. Use an impact socket. I broke a regular 6 point ratchet socket on the busa's tie rod nuts. An impact is probably best to use but I only have a 26" breaker bar. I put a six point wrench on bolt head and supported that with a jack to keep it from turning. I have a suspension removal tutorial on here if you want to have a look.

I'm also changing the sprockets and chain on the busa. Still waiting for Renthal Utralight front sprocket to come in. I found an aluminum engine sprocket nut for the busa and it's inexpensive too. I have some new grips to put on that bike and an Accossato front brake MC. I have an APE manual cam chain tensioner waiting to go on and I'm planning to order BST rims for the busa. Other than that, a few aluminum and Ti bolts. Pondering buying a Ti engine and frame bolt kit but $700?....!

The 14 can't complain. It's gotten all the attention in the last ten years.

On my Busa I swapped the swing arm probably 4 times. Yeah, that is a pain.
My Favorite was a 4" over Mac arm that looked factory. It had extended over bracing and the powder coating was a near perfect match.

As far as the ZX14R, It's going to have to wait until next year for a swing arm and a shock . The Hindle pipe, tune and other mods are going to kill the budget this year. I'm leaning towards 4-6 over for this bike.

How well do the light weight sprockets hold up to the big power of the Busa or 14? Do you run aluminum on the rear as well?

I use aluminum on the rear. I go through 2 rear sprockets for every front. I get at least 24,000 miles out of a front and at that point, even a high quality chain is just about at max wear so I change it too. I'm sure you won't get that much mileage if you're drag racing but that's how it works out for me doing mostly sport riding with a few miles on the road getting to and from the twisties.

What you have listed is pretty much what I have had up to this point except I have teh stock windscreen . Only additions are a HoleShot electric shifter and a Motion Pro throttle .

How do you like the shifter? Would you do it again or go a different route?

I've been looking at shifters and haven't decided on one yet. I know I don't want to have a compressor on board so I have to have an air tank or go electric. I really don't want to use nitrous for the shifter but I could use the arm for a tank.

It just seems to me electric is the simpler way to go if there is a reliable option out there. I did look at the Pingle set up but that ram is big and ugly!

I purchased the shiftee about 2005. It is only upshifts . It was expensive compared to air etc. I chose it for exactly same reasons as you stated. I have replaced the cable once. That is total maintenance . I used the adjustment system that was provided until acquiring the zx14 .Pictures coming

How hard was it to figure out the kill box? Once the kill time and adjusting was set up it is consistent and no miss sifts?
Part of what scares me about air shifters is hearing miss shifts all the time at the track. I’d love a type of “set it and forget it” type of set up.

I’m really starting to like the sounds of that setup.

Since I had a power commander on teh ZX14, we decided to time the shifter thru it rather than teh mechanical set up that WholeShot provides ( altho I had used that setup for about 10+ years with very few adjustments due to a LOT of shifts in that time ) with the power commander , I see no adjustments happening unless I want to change kill duration.. I have to host pictures on my own site and link to them be a few minutes..

The way mine is setup, during a race, shift is determined by rpm set thru teh Power Commander . Nothing has to be done to ride on the street. Shifting at lower rpms is done by foot or button.. By foot will eventually wear on cable , I believe.. but we are talking several years. I am sure :)
Overall VERY happy with teh set up My one hangup and problem wa caused by getting my foot in teh way of the shift lever when using the button . I did that a lot just riding on the street, not realizing that it would eventully stress teh "star shifter" *( sorry I do not know technical term) which meant replacing it . While doing that my mechaninc found a very VERY slight crack in teh clutch hub that I could only see after he pointed it out to me ( and that is why he does all my work except for oil and tires..

Bottom line...only failure of any type was due 1. cable slop after 15 yrs or so :) and 2. my sloppy foot position while riding.

If I needed to do it again, I would most definitely check out a two way shifter. HoleShot may have one by now ..

Chrly I was watching a video you posted in another thread and saw you had mirrors on the inner corners of the upper fairing. They look like blind spot mirrors but where did you get them?

Todays 2021 opening event .. added a 16 /17 gear set up and increased teh wheelbase by 6 inches .. Hated to do it but an 8 second run is my goal as I have stated before . 9 runs today. Ended last year with 9.408 @ 151.? Started of today with a 9.306 @ 153.51 then a 9.277 @ 153.33. Got overconfident started launching at 8000 and went nuts, spinning like crazy The rest of teh nite was 9.30 to9.40 so need to get my head back in to riding and knock off a few more tenths :). next time :) 26 more events this year..

Nice. It was -10 here this morning so racing is still a ways off for me.

Picking up E.T. First time out on a new setup is always nice.

Man I am too cold when it is 50 degrees out. We WERE lucky to have a beautiful day for racing..( got in 14 runs I think. Two time slips missing but it was sorta hectic Several broken cars .. Two of them hit teh wall and one bike rider new to drag racing crashed .. I hope everyone has settled down now :)

I know around here (Chicagoland area) until the ground is thoroughly warmed up you have to be careful. Even a well prepared track can be slick. The other thing that gets people here is when the dew sets in at night. I’ve seen a lot of problems from both situations.
