New Shoes
07/21/18 8:35 PM

So I went all in with a new pair of Pirelli Bada Bing Super Poopers - it's only money right? So I spooned on the pair Thur evening and whipped em into shape with my handy dandy new el cheapo wheel balancer. Rode into work on Friday and they felt like -- tires? Guess I was expecting something special but it was just the short in town busy commute.

So, I followed the Pirelli directions exactly on the easy 200 mile breakin and went for a 235 mile ride today with about 50 other excellent riders from SoCal Sport Bikers. Probably should have followed the rules but what a waste that would have been. 100 miles of twisty great riding on Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada over to Wrightwood and then up the backside of the San Gabriels into Lake Arrowhead for lunch. Down the front side on some 100 mph sweepers into the inferno for last gas up before the final 60 miles of SoCal fun (aka lane splitting) and home to cool pleasure at the beach.

Great tires. Super smooth and stable. On the high speed stuff I was going faster than usual and I was actually trying to keep it down. I think the super smooth and stable gives a level of confidence I'm not used to. The high speed on the sweepers was somewhat unexpected I'm not used to and need to get more seat time in to be comfortable. At the end of the day, I was keeping up with the CBRs, the Ducacci's and the RRs.

$500 pluss a new wheel balance stand - guess it was worth it. What a great ride today

Just did 300 on a new set of Pirelli Super Corsas myself yesterday. Mostly some tight 30mph averaged 50+ corners. Very consistent, pushed a couple corners a little harder than usual but the tires felt stable and planted. Expensive tires and I'm hearing short life for aggressive riding.

What are you running for cold pressure? I started out 39R/40F.

Some day I need to head south. You got some fun road in Cali. Not complaining though, we got a few good ones up here in the PNW too.

They are good. I'm not a tire snob. I think I'm pretty impartial and analytical about mods and there's only a few I would say really make the bike noticeably better. Pirelli street/track tires are one. Stiffer sides and really good grip. Now go for a 200/55 next time and you will get an even bigger eye opener.

Man those Superbike Pro slicks were the absolute cat's ass. I wish they didn't discontinue those. Supercorsas are as good albeit a bit more expensive.

Hey Rook
I did go with the 200/55 on your advice - and thank you!

David
It was warm to hot today, probably 95 at the end on the fast sweepers. I set the F at 38 and the R at 36 today and from the ware patterns i think that was about right

on the 200/55!!

I've gone as low as 25 front and 25 rear cold (maybe even lower) and they still feel perfectly stable. Maybe a bit flexy at very low speed. Other tires I've tried that low of pressure with on the street felt totally awkward in a corner.

I'm running the 200/55 also
Thank you Rook.

A little cooler up here Rudy,
I have run 38R/39F with good results. 30/30 on the track.

What is the "advantage" of the 200/55 rear? I had a 200/50 and it was just fine, but I didn't really like the profile so I'm running 190/55.

What didn't you like about the profile? To flat?

The 200/55 would be a very similar profile to the 190/55 just a little wider and taller. But since it is also on the same width wheel that will make the profile a little rounder and as a result this tire becomes even taller.

It will give you better contact patch at higher lean and it raises the rear of the bike so steering is a lot quicker.

And it looks badd ass when people look at the back of the bike.

Exactly, the 200/50 was flat in the center. Handled and worked fine. It may even be a little better, with more rubber on the center line, with lack twisties around me.

So even with the stock rim, the 200/55 works that good?

I think so. But your right about the center contact patch being better on the 200/50. A lot of tires have a dual compound to help with tire wear. Hard in the center and soft on the shoulders.

Typically I only get 3500 miles out of the rear. I'm hearing even less out of the Pirrelli SuperCorsa SP I am running now.

The 200/55 fits fine on the 14R. The profile being a bit taller than the /50 series tire should help a little with turn because the profile is a bit more of a V shape than a U shape. But honestly, the 190/55 turned great and the 200/55 turns great. The Bada Bing's seem smother to me than the Mich PP 2CTs but then its probably the new tire effect. That and the fact that $500 worth of new tires must be great -- Right?

At least 5hp too!

Are the wheels on the gen1 narrower than the 14R? Sure makes it look round vs V on my 06.
Also used to run the Mich PP 2CT. Then Q3s and now the Pirelli super poopers.
