Muzzy Fan
04/04/12 4:22 PM

Last weekend I flushed my radiator and while I was there, I changed the stock fan with a Muzzy blade.
The install was painless, however, the blade was scrapping against the heat/dust shield that is sitting on top of the head (the one the goes across the entire head).

I had to trim the left side of the shield, which caused the shield to brake in half. Any problems with not having the shield on the left side (area that covered the top of the fan)?

Thanks

By the way, the muzzy aluminum fan needs to be trimmed.... oh you found that out without reading the instructions! :)

Also, once you trim it, you need to balance it, or it will eventually set up an oscillation and bite your radiator.

And word on the street is your OEM plastic fan blade moves just as much air.

Speaking about water wetter, radiators and fans coming on, I was told by a good source, there is a chemical reaction happening to the water temp sensor surfaces if exposed to WW. Might want to think about that down the road if a fan/heating condition happens. That sensor is just a in-out sensor = Junk in is junk out.

I use disaylotwo mention how OEM stock I remain =

What a bummer, az. What part are you talking about? This thing? I call that the Heat shield wings.

No, you don't need that. AFAIK, the only purpose is to isolate the radiator heat from the engine compartment so that it will not rise up at the rider.

There is actually 3 pieces and none of them are good for much other that a poor attempt to minimize heat when the bike is moving slow. I would remove the whole thing if I were you. Here's my how too.

Heat Wing Removal

.....or was it that rubber they put on the engine?? That can go too. Lots of work to remove that without cutting it off but i have a How too on that one as well.
Heat Insulator Rubber Shield, Engine

The hot wind covers can go too.
HOT WIND COVERS AND BRACKETS

All that heat crap can be removed and stored away in the closet.

Yes, so you don't mind the extra heat on you?

Since 2010 the C14 has had excellant heat baffles, I would never think of taking them off. I had to slice a slit in the left side to run the mount through for the Rostra speed control, and made sure to patch that real close to the bracket so it continues to work.

Rook - that is the correct picture of the part.
Privateer - i did run the bike for 15 minutes or so, no issues with blade hitting anything. the space between the blade and fins are about 1/8. will the blade warp later and hit the fins?
I thought the trimming was required for after market pipes

thank you for your responses

Like Rook suggested, I'd just remove the thing... If you wanna replace it, shim it to clear the Muzzy fan. A washer or two between the mounts and reed/PAIR covers will do the job. I have Ivans block off plates on my bike, which are thicker than the factory covers, and therefore allotted me the necessary clearance for my Muzzy fan.

Agreed... The Muzzy just looks and sounds cooler... no pun intended.

Interesting... I just switched from Engine Ice to distilled + Wix (same as WW) in my 10r. Mental note taken.

maybe some pipes require body panel modification but that would be the lower fairing trim, not the wings. The bottom edge of the lower w/o trim lies like 1/16" away from my pipe. It melted a tiny bit right there on the edge. minor.

Although this is an older thread,i'm glad I read it. I had been on the fence about buying and installing the Muzzy fan for my 010 as I also had thought of changing the coolant over to Evans 1012PF Waterless Powersports Coolant. I've read through various threads of different forumns and now I feel that doing the fan can wait or maybe not do at all. However I do like the thought of switching to the Evans Waterless Coolant. I actually added a little WW after buying the bike last July since I needed to add a little coolant until I researched doing any maintenance or mods. But I wanted to know more about the bike and do all the TLC I could before this years riding season got underway. I'm really liking this bike and it makes me want to hone my riding skills to enjoy it even more,so learning and adjusting to any mechanicals & habits of the bike are important to me feeling more comfortable. The heat I've experienced was something I'd heard of way before going to the 14,but even then it's a real impact upon first experiences! Good to see these discussions as many who share their knowledge & experiences always helps!

I didn't notice much difference after removing all of the heat shields from my 08 ZX-14. The foam pads, rubber blankets and plastic shields are all gone now. Seems about the same.

I haven't done a thing to reduce heat but it runs about a bar cooler with the full system I put on. I like the heat on the cooler days of fall and spring. If it's 100° in summer, it will go to 5 bars but it doesn't feel as hot as it did with the stock exhaust. That was a little scary.
