Help powering GPS at front & intercom from rear
12/12/14 12:23 PM

Guys ... I'd like to mount a 12V power outlet at the front somewhere. I've seen what a few others have done & can figure out the location and mounting method.

But I also want to provide a 12V power outlet somewhere around the tail. Occasionally my intercom battery dies, so I'd like to be able to run a coiled power cable to it, coiled to keep some tension on it to keep it from blowing around too much in the wind. I can figure out where to mount that, too.

The question is ... how to power these two 12V outlets. Should I install a power block somewhere under the tail and come off that for both outlets? Or power them both by coming straight off the battery? (problem with that is, with my new Battery Tender pigtail attached, there are quite a few wire terminals already connected in there, so running out of room). Would also prefer that both outlets are switched with the bike's key so they aren't accidentally left on; so where's a good place to tap into a switched source? (preferably without doing a major OEM wiring intrusion)

Thanks for whatever you can offer ...

Depending on what you want to run on the front, you can splice in to one of your running lights and have a switched power. I run a GPS and phone from the running light and don't have any problems. Easy to get to and splice in. Never had a need to get power in the rear but I would think the tag light would be a good source that would be switched for a low power draw like the intercom. For a heated item you would need to come off the battery or install a power block. I've seen several great write-ups on switched power under the seat, just depends again on how much power you need.
