Does your 14R run this hot?
06/09/17 6:37 AM

I came across this old picture, stock except for an Ivan's flash. 190F at 80mph? It was really hot out at 102F but my bike was BAKING me. I'm wondering if a ZX10 fender, ceramic header and cat-less exhaust would bring the temp down, if this is abnormal that is.

My guess is a catless header would do the most good. My Gen 1 usually runs about a bar cooler with the aftermarket exhaust although I still see it go up to 5 bars if it's really hot out. I might have seen 6 bars after shutdown a time or two but that was a given on a hot day with the stock exhaust. To tell you the truth, I don't monitor this too closely anymore because it's not a problem.. I've been thinking of removing my oil cooler.

on my Gen 2 with stock pipes, the fan kicks in at 95 degC
but if i get stuck in a traffic jam under the hot sun, the digital display can climb up to 105 degC... kind of scary...

I'm ok with it running hot in town it's out on road like this that concerns me. The thermostat is fully open at around 160 right? That's 30 degrees high. My XX for example started opening at 177 but it stayed at 177 as long as I was moving above 40pmh and no one in front of me.

There was one time that I thought the fan was going to come on at 80mph since Ivan had flashed it to come on so soon.

the converter says 95 degC = 203 degF
my radiator cooling fan kicks in at 95 degC

You might try some WaterWetter,or Engine Ice.I think Kawasaki also makes a coolant mix that will lower running temps.I think mine normally runs around 150F.Somewhere in that range.I've had it go to 200+ before. But it didn't stay there once moving.I would say....normal.Yours sounds 'normal'.Just a part of these big inlines. It won't harm anything.Long as yer fan kicks in when it should...all's good.I wouldn't worry about it.
The Gen 2 has TWO fans. You sure they're both working?I'd say,102F is kinda high(ambient temps)Doesn't surprise me it would be a bit hotter dealing with that. Not too much can be done about the engine heat. It's more about airflow around the motor than the motor being 'too hot'.Just KEEP MOVING!!!;)And stay outta the throttle at idle.If your timing is in a leaner setting, this can cause some heat issues. You say you flashed it.How about the stock settings?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you start getting above like 245+

There's nothing wrong with these motors running in and around 200.

On the gen2 stock, fans turn on at 204 and off at 194.

Schnitz flash has the fans turn on at 194 and off at 184

I ride daily in temps well over 100 and fans are pretty
much always running.

The only concern is you do not want to "boil" the coolant.

boiling point of water is 212 add coolant 50/50 and psi to 15psi and you just
raised the boiling point to like 267f

If you start boiling over is the only time to be concerned or
else everything is good to go.

If you want better cooling for your coolant you can try to adjust
mixture rate. If you are running like 50/50 lower to 30% or even less.

Pure water cools better then anti-freeze, but have to balance all
the draw backs. like lower boiling points, higher freezing points, etc.

I do not use any anti freeze in my coolants, no need.

Thanks for all the help guys, lots of posts in a short period of time.

I'm speaking of a constant steady flow of air into the radiator at high speed. Not in town or riding around at 20mph or idling. I took my glove off in the picture to see where the heat was coming from at it was a massive swath of inferno like heat from every angle, around the dash, everywhere, particularity next to the fins but that air gets directed right back onto your leg at 80mph which I thought was supposed to direct it away from you?

Riding in 102 would feel like a furnace if you don't have any gear on. I remember back in the day when I wore tshirts, shorts, and sunglasses riding anything probably around 95+ it literally was like sitting in front of a blowing heater, actually cooler stopped. Gear on really made a huge difference IMO.

As far as the bike, make sure the coolants changed and topped off and you're good to go. I'd say somewhere around there seems like it would be normal on a 102 day.

Have you checked the thermostat? If it's not opening it will run at hotter temps even at speed. Really easy to check, pull it out and put into a jug and pour hot water from a kettle into the jug. It should open immediately.

At least on a California bike that I have, completely normal reading, especially at 102f ambient temps.
On cool days (say around 55/60) steady running with nothing in front of me will drop down to ~160 give or take, but frequently see ~185-192 or so drilling down freeways on 80+ degree days...As far as baking you, I will say that anything short of either leather or textile riding pants will result in noticeable heat. Jeans or less will absolutely will cook your legs for sure. Wearing gear though, never notice the engine heat.

Luckily the hottest it typically gets up here is 28-30C and 90% of my commute is highway traffic so I don't get to experience the easy bake oven on the 14.

That being said, I think a good part of the problem is the design of the fairings that direct heated air at your legs. I remember being caught in heavy downpour on my zx9, when I got home my shoes and legs (below the knees) were bone dry while on the zx14 my shoes and legs are wet in the rain (same roads).

Here's a pic of a zx9, not mine, hard to really see in the picture but the fairings end rather abruptly where as on the 14 they are contoured back towards the center of the bike.
