I’ve just got myself a Gen1 ZZR1400…..and with the help of
With some helm from KAWASAKI Forums I have resolved a few issues….bar one

My niggling problem now is after switching the bike off the display time sits at 1.00 and mileage counters 0
I can set the time and when the bike is running the mileage counter works normally and I can set the clock
Switch the bike of and boom back to zero an time 1.0 so it’s not just about the method for setting the clock.

I’ve read lots about the problem….
battery…seems to be healthy no issues ……keeps 12.6v…..CBTX14-BS 12An 200 CGA Acouple of years old
Battery Terminals tight and clean.
Earth…..checked and cleaned the earthing points
Live feedG to the plug behind Instrument Panel Plug has a constant live feed when the bikers switch off …
Checked with voltage meter showing still live

I am hoping for a solution here from you guys ??
Has any one actually had experience in resolving this problem….I’d be very grateful for any help.

Sounds like a bad meter.
Can't be a bad ground. Notice how it will continue to count from zero. Plus, it's ready to count with key on.
Can't be the battery. Bike starts and runs, just loses memory with key off.
Can't be a stuck mode switch with two metering signals going back to zero.

But notice how if you held the mode or one of the up/down toggles, you can physically zero out the A or B modes and the clock option. So again, key off, this automatically zero's out both trip and clock. Something is on the motherboard and for all I am guessing at is the key off, the zero out, the motherboard being the problem?

Press and hold down SEL button for 2 seconds.
Use the up/down buttons to get to the CLOCK setting.
Press SEL, hour display blinks, use up/down to set hour.
Press SEL again, minute display blinks, use up/down to set minute.

Press SEL again,DISPLAY STOPS BLINKING, clock starts working again.

Sounds like you're just missing pushing sel button again to lock the time in.
All other 'settings' are staying put when you turn the key off and back on,right?
You push 'select' button everytime you finish a setting on the clock.(once you've reset it).For the hour AND the minute.Methinks the meter is fine...

I’m setting the time right…..besides the trip meter mileage counter also reverts to zero which has nothing to do with the clock time…..perhaps it is the motherboard as suggested….an expensive fix

I did read somewhere during my search something about the battery Amperage.
The original zzr1400 battery is a FTZ14-BS. which is 14Ah. The battery I know have is @2Ah
What I recall reading is that if the bike thinks there is not enough juice it shuts down
Some of the services….
Another thing is that apparently the immoboliser light should flash a couple of seconds
after turning the key off….mine doesn’t

Any reason you'd have a 2Ah battery?
When you're riding,where are the volts sitting?
And sitting turned off...you say stays at 12.6.It generally will need at least 12.8 or more to fire the bike.
Maybe the battery IS losing power overnight.
I mean,if the bike requires a 14 Ah battery,then why install something WAY less?

Sorry Typo 12Ah ?? I didn’t install the battery
It came with the bike and starting the bike no problem and keeping the charge
Incidentally the equivalent battery is YTX14-BS 12Ah

Problem solved pin 10 broken in the make end of the plug…soldered a wire on the back of the plug and attached
It to the black/white wire on the loom going to the female end of the plug….wallah

Congrats, but are we talking pin 10 at the back of the dash? Look at the pins face on and top right at the end is pin 10. That's 12v going in. Pin 9 is also 12v. Yeah, I can see a loss of 12v is like pulling the battery out and then back in. Weird how it would come on and off. But that's E for you.

Yes pin 9 ignition and 10 battery positive both 12v. Pin 12 negative/earth.

Interestingly my bike was showing on the instrument display battery 9v
In the workshop manual it says connect pins 9, 10 and 12…..the instrument display should show 12.6v
then disconnect pin 9 and the display should show 9v
So I deduced it had to be something like that.

Interesting. I can see 12v going in at both 9-10, one showing battery voltage at the one pin, the other being a chip setting the volts to 9? Not about to question not seeing 5v or less, but if that was the number, so it is. Meter is back to normal so that is the readout number. Ah, I almost missed keeping "RAM" set 24-7 thinking this one out.

Just curious how you caught it. You said to yourself, I think I better check the harness for a bad connection, pulled the connector off, saw the one pin sticking out of the connector's female end? Kind of obvious was it?

Now I'm going to take a wild guess. Vibe can only push the broken pin in so far if any? Probably none at all, but... ... this guy shows up. I am now thinking; having a clearance of say .000000002" of an [air] gap at the crack, give or take a few more million zeros.

Key on, it's moving current if at all touching, but I say not touching at all, but enough PUSH of that being it can jump the gap and now reset the clock, etc. But with key off, merlin stops the flow or the real explanation is PUSH, and that means Volts.

Therefore, I am going to say that Volts could jump that gap of air, key back on, you are back to "ROM." How close do you think I got throwing that at the wall and making it stick?

Me too. I'm going to assume human error at assembly. Had to be clicked in twice? Pin(s) got caught, had to raise/lower whichever pin(s) involved. This took a stress, and whatever harmonics during and up to the break? I'd rule out a machine assembly of the ECU. Untouched so they all are straight right out the gate.

There was no sign if the broken pin at all…..who knows on a 16 year old bike how many people have looked at it and not realised it was the pin the had broken off….on my first look I only check the female end of the harness plug

maybe that's not the original meter unit?Hard to believe it just broke off connected in there.+Glad you got it sorted.Good Job!
