Update on Jay "Old Man"
12/05/17 7:58 AM

From his wife Kay...
Hi Steve,

Thank you for your text. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

It is easier for me to email you than text. But I actually didn't have time to sit in front of my computer.

( Now I regret I should have texted you so you would have gotten my reply sooner )

Thank you for asking about Jay and keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

Jay is making some progress but it is slow. He can now feed himself ( no help )with spoon using his right hand.

He eats everything and even has fruits his brother brings for him for snack. He enjoys eating, that's a good thing.

He doesn't seem to be gaining much weight though. My brother in law tells me that he gained some but doesn't tell me

how much with numbers. As far as I see through photos , I don't see much difference.

He is practicing to walk but not much progress. He spends more time on wheelchair. His right side is a bit weaker than his left,

so when he pushes the wheelchair himself, it tends to go around in big circles. He needs to practice or strengthen his right side more for this.

He still needs help getting up and getting on wheelchair. He needs support to stand up. He can walk very slowly with a walker and

someone to help push his right leg forward. But overall, I think he has made big progress in physical aspect.

His memory and language has not shown much progress. We try to do video chatting every night, but for some reason, Jay often doesn't want

to do it. When we do video chatting ( about once a week when he says YES ) he smiles when he sees us though he can't say or remember our names.

He doesn't talk and responds by nodding or shaking his head which is about 80% accurate now. We ask him questions like

Do you miss us?

Do you want to come back to California?

He thinks for a little bit and shakes his head. He does this every time we ask him these questions. I am beginning to think although our faces may be

familiar to him, he may not know who we are.

Occasionally, he would try to say something, but it all doesn't make sense.

He he can say simple words like Hello, Thank you, Bye bye, ( all in Japanese ) only when his brother tells him

to say those words. He doesn't seem to understand which word to use under given circumstances. He cannot read and he still cannot write.

I also see that he doesn't show much interest in anything. His doctor tells me that this is due to the injury. It is like he has lost motivation to do anything.

Except eating. I think eating is rewarding to him because it tastes good. Other things like walking, talking, video chatting, and practice writing does not bring him immediate

reward.

I am taking the kids to Japan from Dec 13 to Jan 1st to go see Jay. It has been a while and we all miss him very much.

I hope to get better understanding of how he is doing too. Once he is physically well enough to fly, I want to bring him back here.

Thank you again for your text.

I hope to send you good news after I see him.

Thank you for keeping us updated. I have no words to express how really sad the whole situation seems to be for him and the entire family. Hopefully he will get better and someday things will get back to normal for them. Thanks again.

I can tell you that delicious food is all encompassing for me. I need absolute silence and zero distraction when I destroy a delicate lasagna.

I can't say it any better than Kofla has. This must be enormously difficult for Jay's family. After coming all this way, maybe Jay will have to relearn to be a father and a husband like he is relearning everything else.

The latest.

Jay is back in the US in Bakersfield CA. That was the nearest treatment facility that could handle his long term care.
Still doesn't speak any English. Some Japanese. Eats with help. Walks with support. Does not know his family except that they visit often which makes him smile. He cries when they leave. It looks like the damage was very severe. I'm not sure he'll ever make it all the way back.
Keep him and Kay and his family in your thoughts.

WOW. Starting from scratch at our age has to be rough but he wouldn't have it any other way, I'm sure. I'm glad for him that he has the love of his family and is rebuilding that bond. That is truly amazing. In a way, it might be better that he doesn't know life before the accident and only what he has now. Peace and love to that family.

Hi all,
Spoke to Kay last night. Jay slowly improving but a long way to go. She wanted to know about his bike. She wants to keep it at least until Jay can come home and see it. She's hoping it will trigger some improvement. Last year I went over, topped off the tank with premium and Stabil. Put it on a rear stand and hooked it to his Battery Tender, Covered it up. It looks like it will be sitting for awhile. Should I go back and do anything different for storage? Start it , use up some gas, re fill it with more Stabil? Remove the battery ?
Please give me your thoughts.

If it's ethanol, I'd removal it and re-fill with non-ethanol. Mercury Marine's website states that the fuel additives do nothing to save you from ethanol. And you'd think that by now those additive companies would've ponied up to get Mercury to change their tune, but so far Mercury is simply stating the truth - It's junk, unless burned pretty quickly.

If you can't drain it, or ride it for 150 miles, then I guess Stabil is better than nothing ... I guess. I know some guys swear by it, but it seems like we should trust Mercury over the opinions of a few guys with small sample sizes.

I wouldn't worry too much about the battery. New batteries aren't that expensive. Just top it off, if possible, and leave it on the tender ... and hopefully it'll still be good later, but wouldn't be surprised if not. Battery Tenders these days are very inconsistent.

Since we're talking about possibly a long time in storage (years?) I would suggest:
-drain the tank completely & run the engine until it dies (empty the fuel rail)
-pull the battery but keep it on the tender
-lower the pressure in the tires
-lift the front as well or at least keep the rubber from touching cement
-shoot some fogging oil into the cylinders
-plug the exhaust
-flush & replace the coolant
-change the oil & filter
-clean & wax the bike (also keep it covered)
-moth balls or something along the lines to keep critters out (ie mice, squirrels)

That's about all I can think of for long term storage, I wish him and his family a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the info. I filled up at Chevron. I've looked all over their pumps and nowhere does it say there is any ethanol in the gas. Correct me if I'm wrong. I had a load of the same gas in my KTM for almost 3 years and it looked fine when I finally got it running.
I'm hoping for the best, but Jay's injury is very bad. I'm not sure he'll ever ride again.

Dam, i feel bad for Jay, and his family. Mad maybe for the time being you could take the bike out and run it for Jay? a micro fiber towel and wax as u dry detailer, some chain lube or marvel mystry oil on a red rag and just wipe the chain and light lube, at least 50 or 100 mile run, a splash of fresh gas.

thanks for your support Mad

Yeah Streetsweeper, I was thinking of going over and doing that. Maybe take it out for a couple hours then refill the tank with fresh gas. It's a beautiful bike. I really hope Jay can enjoy it again. I have another friend who had a traumatic brain injury in a crash. It took 2 years but he's back riding again, although still dealing with issues.
The brain is a tough organ. Sometimes the body can find a way to rewire everything and he can come most of the way back. Only time will tell.

I just spoke to Kay again.
Jay is now home. He has Global Aphasia. Limited mobility, uses a wheelchair. Severe memory loss, mood swings. Kay has in home care every day from 6am to 9 pm. I don't think Jay will ever recover from this.
It's really too bad, he was pretty close to retirement. I'll pass on any thoughts.

Damn, that really sucks

But thanks for the update, and please send well wishes / sympathy / condolences.

I've thought about the desirable way to go out: Dementia means you're a burden to others. Body failing before your brain means you're a burden to others AND yourself. So I'm wishing for a reasonably gentle heart attack! ... in my sleep! ... while drunk! ... after sex! ... or during!

If a bicycle or some other bigger vehicle is gonna hit me and do this kinda damage, just keep on goin' and finish me off.

In all seriousness ... Get well, Jay. No comedic offense intended.

Jay's wife is an angel. I hope he will make some progress. Jay's family deserves high honors for their loyalty.
