Future Rider
08/18/19 5:11 PM

My 10 year old granddaughter has been bugging me about going for a ride for awhile.
We finally got her geared up with some nice stuff. Left Morgan Hill and took the back roads out to Uvas Reservoir. Stopped there to check and see if she had any concerns. Answer, " Let's keep going!"
Up and over the mountain where we hit fog. Cool and wet. Got to Watsonville and stopped at Gizdich Ranch for some homemade Dutch Apple pie and coffee and cocoa. After that delicious breakfast we reversed course home. She loved every minute of the ride and wants to go again.

It looks like she had a lot of fun. I bet she's looking forward to her next ride.

Totally awesome! My kids like to go for a ride but only slow. They could definitely ride off road. I just taught my oldest to drive and we both enjoyed that. Sure would love to teach them a clutch. We have the Tuscobia Trail here. 80 miles of 12' wide, graded gravel mostly very straight and flat. Safest place I can imagine to ride a dirt bike.

Alex is just like her grandma, my wife, she loves to go fast. The faster we go the more she laughs.
I've already started talking to her about riding well and riding safe. I suspect she may end up wanting to get a bike for herself later.
She's ridden with me on my KTM on dirt roads too and loved sliding around corners.
Watch out Mark Marquez....

Awesome video Kofla. She reminds me of Elena Meyers. Before she started racing in the AMA , Elena used
to practice on the kart track her father ran. We used to race our YSR50s there. I remember one day
going as fast as I could on my YZ80 powered YSR and 12 year old Elena came flying past me on her
YZF450 Supermoto. It was impressive to say the least.

I got my little guy on the back of the bike last year when he was 10 as well and he loves it! I'd highly recommend getting an intercom system so you guys can chat along the ride. I picked up a pair of BT-S2 and would recommend them IF you guys use earplugs to block out the wind noise.

They're inexpensive, easy to use, easy to install (get the soft microphone option if you have a full face helmet) and are always on. They're not as good as the better known brands but at a fraction of the price I'm really happy with them.

I got them off of amazon so just search there but this is what they look like:

I can vouch for the Sena SMH10R being pretty darn good. Me and 4 buds have had them since 2014, and I dunno how we'd ever ride without them now: They're great for discussing routes on the fly, warning of debris in the road, warning of a car about to turn in front of you, deciding where to stop and eat, telling all I need fuel, etc etc ... well, all that plus general chitchat

... but NOT for warning each other when it's safe to pass in no-pass curves, cuz hey we would never do that

Hay Nightmare, question.
I assume I would be buying 2 units? One unit won't work for rider and passenger, yes?

Mad - In case he doesn't reply for a while: I can't speak to his brand but with Sena you can buy either 1 unit, or they sell a 2-pack.

BTW, with the Sena's we have you can connect up to 4 intercoms together. I think newer models now do 6 (or more?). The way it works with ours is, when you meet up, assuming nobody is already paired (that's their term for connecting my Sena to yours), 2 guys pair and then join, then the 3rd one joins that group, then the 4th one joins in. It's not as easy as it could be, but it works. I keep a little cheat sheet on my bike, cuz sometimes we forget how to do it

Maddevill,

Yes, you'll need 2 units, 1 for you and 1 for your passenger, there are 2 packs on Amazon that are a bit better deal than buying individually. The picture I posted earlier shows the "hard" microphone (boom mic), the soft one is a wire with a very good adhesive tape on it and I do recommend that for full face helmets. I plan on picking up another set of the microphone/earpiece wiring so I can move the passenger unit to a 3rd helmet.

For a bit more info so you are fully aware of what you are getting:
The good:
-Great price!
-Great range (tested to a 800-1000m 2600ft-3200ft)
-Long battery (IMO, easily 8+ hours of use per charge)
-Easy to use (takes like 15 seconds and 2 button pushes to pair the 2 units and start chatting)
-Bluetooth works great, pairs to my phone and other devices effortlessly
-Universal intercom (I connected it with a Sena headset and was able to chat no issue)
-Microphone & noise cancelling works really well, I had a number of people during a phone call exclaim "you're on your motorcycle right now???"

The bad:
-Wish it was a bit louder, I can hear music and talking up to about 120km/h (75mph) but that deminishes with a headwind
-For higher speeds/louder volumes you need/want to use ear plugs... but you should be doing that anyways to protect your hearing.
-No jack for external headphones/microphone, there IS a jack there but its designed to be used with a 2-way radio.
-FM radio reception is marginal (yeah I actually use it)
-The charging cord is proprietary, not a big deal just not sure why they didn't go with mini-USB since its very similar.

This all being said, I still recommend them and I'm sure your granddaughter will love it!
