Tires?
05/28/09 7:19 PM

Looks like I got about 6 months or so of tread on the rear tire. Any ideas on what kind of tires i should replace them with? I will be mostly be doing local riding and occasional tours. Looking for something that sticks around corners pretty good.

All depends how important side grip is to you. Most riders can't use all that is offered in a "sport tire" for street use.
That being said, I would be looking into a dual compound sport touring tire like the Michelin Road 2's or Dunlops Roadsmart's.
I've used them on my ZX9R, my buddies Busa, and both of us can ride right to the edges of the rear tires with no drama.

I'm using stockers and they last me exactly 5K for rears and 10K for the front.
I always square my rear tires because I have a real long commute on the freeways...

Im bikeless now... except for the hardly working old Kat...

So far I'm really liking the avon storms. I have conti road attacks on the busa......after the first couple of rides I can say they make the busa feel much more like a liter bike handling wise. They're also wearing way better than the bridgestones on it previously. The rear seems to be going away quicker than the storms on the 14 tho.....

Has anyone tried out a tire by the name of Shinko Tire - Shinko 005 Advance Rear Tire. I have been looking at it, but I have not done the maintenance or up keep on a street bike before, any feed back you give or know about this tire would be greatly appreciated. Also those oil changes can be spendy as well, I purchased all the necessary equipment to do it myself and was surprised at how cheap it is to do your self, 90 dollars at the dealer, versus less than thirty myself. Next time I will use synthetic oil. Tell me what you know about the tire. Enjoy the ride, be the ride.

Hey, Irv. I have no experience with Shinkos but recently being in the market for new rubber myself, I had been watching the tire threads. Shinkos are very popular with drag racers so they must have awsome grab but it seems to me they are about the heaviest tire out there. I don't know if this applies to all models of Shinkos or just some.

I got myself Bridgstone BTO-16s going on many recomendations here on the forum. They have a hard center tread, soft inner side tread and very soft sticky outer side tread. They should ware pretty even and provide good traction for cornering. The rear is a 190/55 which I can see has a higher, more elipticle tread surface. It is said to turn in better and it definitely will give a larger contact patch when banking hard into a turn. I can't see how it would do anything but ware down from an oval to a more typical circular shape. The tire should retain a good rounded shape for cornering even after the center tread has been worn down as long as some cornering was also done.

Good luch on your choice. There are many.

my 016's have a little flat spot in the middle(not much) and I do alot of crusing and a bit a hard cornering. Overall pretty impressed with them(they are sticky), about to get another rear(at roughly 4000 miles). After that I'm gonna try the 2CT's when I replace the front and rear.

I'm running the road 2's. Best tire I've run on the 14. Right now I have 3k miles on them and they look good. Best mileage I've gotten out of any other tire was around 2500 on a rear (conti-roads, avon storms). On the stockers I got about 1500 and on the pilot powers and the 2ct's only about 1100.

Been going with Diablo Stradas since my first tire change.Avg around 4,500 miles a tire.Fronts, around 6,000-8,000.Cheapest costwise I've found-grip is very good(never slipped so far).Heat up quick, and run on the sides no prob.

I would like to hear from anyone who has tried the Michelin Pilot Sport HPX? I only get about 3500 kms out of the stock 014's.
Thanks.
