o2 connector location
12/13/09 10:28 PM

I need to ask about the best location for the o2 sensor wire connector for my Autotune module. I could go right up through the hole in the swingarm that the rear shock travels through but I don't like that idea because the flexion in the suspension could cause some rubbing or pulling of the wire which will need to be routed along the frame to under the seat where the A-tune module will be located.

Between the water pump and the shift lever seems like a nice place for the connector. This location does not interfere with operation of the shift lever. The connector is not covered which would allow it to be sprayed by water any time i am riding on damp pavement. Also, the connector is squashed right against the water pump and that thing must give off a decent amount of heat when the motor gets hot.

I could go to the other side. The wire would have to be bent over sharply from the sensor but that would give me enough length to position the connector right under the oil sight glass. This would be in a place where the fairing would protect the connector from splashes and dirt. The connector makes contact with the inside of the fairing and this distorts the shape of the fairing just a bit. That thin strip of fairing where the back fastener goes is pretty flexible though. The connector would also be touching the bottom of the crankcase and the exhaust is a couple inches below so we have a lot of heat again.

So which location seems best or is about the same either way?

Thanks. It seems a toss up. I don't think either location is perfect. The wires that I see down low on the bike like the side stand engine kill wire look like they are insulated very well. This one, as you can see, has the internal wires exposed on both sides of the connector. What would make it much better is if they gave us a longer wire from the sensor to the connector. That way, the connector could be positioned up higher in the fairing where it could be kept farther away from heat and protected from rain. I will just tape it up good and probably use some zip ties to hold it in place for now.

Heat may not be as much of a factor as I thought. It's true that the fairing has not suffered the least bit from the heat of the pipe and it is only about 1/16" away along the bottom edge.

How do you like that dielectric grease for protecting wire contacts from moisture? If I squirt that in the connector will it ooze out when the connector gets hot? Warm liquid petroleum might dissolve the sticky on my electrical tape wrap i plan to do on the exposed wires by the connector.

Thanks, Great idea with the shrink wrap. I like that. I already have it taped up and pretty much installed but if i find it necessary to take the thing out and redo it, shrink wrap will be the way i go.
