Fuel Tank
01/30/13 10:14 AM

Are all 2006-2011 Fuel tank the same? I have a California model and was wondering is the fuel tank is different from non-California models. The only differences I can tell between both models are with the Air Box and FI system and I didn't see different part numbers for 06 fuel tanks on ronayers.com. Could somebody confirm?

No difference.Only where the overflow and vapor lines go.From the nipples(which are the same on all the tanks)

Just realized I posted this in the wrong section. Sorry BG meant to go to Q and A.

A Green: I'm not following. You said no difference but then you said the overflow and vapor lines have different routings? Could you explain a little more.

A Cali fuel tank will have 3 of these on the back of the fuel tank. Standard tank has just 1 on each side. The Cali has a fuel evaporation recycler and that is what the extra hose is for. If you get a non Cali tank, you should be able to remove the evaporative emissions junk that comes on the stock bike. Save you a couple pounds.

Rook I apologize for coming in and pissing all over your territory, I hope BG can move this thread into the Q&A section.
I'm off the the tattoo shop. One tattoo for every spill... LOL That's my motto (pun intented)

Just kidding about the one tatoo for every spill thing by the way. I don't have enough real estate to do that!

"Standard tank has just 1 on each side"...yes...

"overflow and vapor lines have different routings?"...yes...into the evap canister. The stock non-cali bikes have no canister. The lines head down underneath...and discharge under the left side of the chassis.I can't say for the pressure relief outlet...on the right side...if it goes into the canister or not...but the overflow will.It may in fact be a single small line on the right...not sure.I thought there were TWO small nipples on that right rear side of the tank. It's been a while since I looked.

I read that the overflow line will destroy the canister IF you continue to fill your tank fully into the neck where heat will cause the fuel to expand and pass into that canister. That's in the manual for the California model.I DO know that with my 07...that line passed under the bike....and overflow emptied onto the ground(not so cool with hot pipes).

I have seen my 08 overflow on the ground early Spring before taken out of storage. Gas filled cold, expands with temp increase and overflows.

drag, according to my SM, a Cali model will not have an fuel tank drain hose(#7) or a clamp (#2) to hold breather hose and idle screw adjuster nob.

I guess if you get a non Cali fuel tank, better make sure you get the proper hoses to go with that evap-canisterless setup.

You got a non-Cali tank and now you need to order the proper overflow hose? Yeah, you might improvise with some 1/8 inch plastic hose for overflow but I would def get the OEM line on there ASAP. Then you can get rid of the evap emissions stuff.

I returned the tank. I could have saved a few hundreds but Hub mentioned the switch affecting air/fuel ratio, and Green: gas on hot pipe etc so it's not worth it. I wanted to get rid of the canister but it does more good than harm so....
I'm glad I saw this. Thanks for the input guys.
