Drag race bike and insurance
12/15/15 4:22 PM

If you devote your bike to a drag race bike then it makes no sense to carry comprehensive insurance on it right? If you wreck it on a drag strip, I'm sure the insurance company would not give you a dime. I just canceled everything but liability and property (which is required in Florida)

I do not carry comp on any of my bikes and have not for years.

Comp can be pretty expensive on "super sport" bikes.

If there's a loan on the bike, comp may be required by
the lien holder.

I don't have comp, but I do add Fire, Theft, Damage.
Fire, Theft, Damage is not very expensive. If I wreck my
bike it's one thing, but if someone stole it, I be pissed.
Also keep in mind "Damage" can be something like just falling
over in the garage.

I carry it. $220 a year 250 Deductible. Cheaper than buying a new bike for sure. Might want to check with your insurance agent just to see what they say. Talk is cheap.

Oopps...

I had my terms mixed up.

Yes, I carry Comprehensive Coverage. It's not that much.

It's Collision I never carry because it cost way to much.
I always price collision, but always to much. My last quotes
for the Collision part only on the 14, Progressive was $900yr,
Cheapest State Farm $400yr and a couple of other companies where like $1300yr+

Comprehensive Coverage
If your insured vehicle is damaged due to an event other than a collision,
Comprehensive coverage will pay for the damage. This includes damages from
fire, theft, windstorm, flood and vandalism.

Collision Coverage
When your insured vehicle overturns or collides with another object,
Collision coverage pays for the damage to your vehicle.

I think his question was more about if you have an accident at a track event, a track day, a drag race night, etc. can you make a claim or not? Let's say I go to a track day, and total my bike. I have full coverage, Comp/Coll, etc. when I call the insurance agent are they going to say "no problem" or "oh...you wrecked at a motorcycle track day"

Bike Insurance "will not" cover you at a track event.

You will get people that say, oh but I knew a guy who knew
a guy that crashed at a track day and his bike was covered or
track days are considered training and training is covered.

I looked quite a bit and have not found "any" company that will
cover a track day at least officially.

And if someone jumps in and says theirs does, great, post the part
of the policy that claims to cover track days and provider.
No one has ever posted that yet, I'd like to find an insurance
company that does. I'm not even worried that much about the bike,
but I have questions on liability.

Here's the part in my current Progressive policy, that says "no" we
do not.

clip ------------------------------------------------------

EXCLUSIONS - READ THE FOLLOWING EXCLUSIONS CAREFULLY.

b. any riding activity conducted on a permanent or temporary racetrack, racecourse, or during any closed course event.

clip ------------------------------------------------------

In Europe lots of insurance companies sell track day insurance for a track day
and is very reasonable, why there's no US insurance companies that do the same,
I don't know.

*** I might add that I think organizers that hold AMA, NHRA, events have
to have insurance that covers entered participants for liability claims, but
not sure about smaller events, TNT's, track days, etc. What happens if you
rear end someone or dump a bunch of oil on the track and they have to take
one of those fancy helicopter rides for $40k or something even worse.

Thanks Piken I was going to ask that exact question you answered!

I checked my state farm policy. States the same thing as your policy in the exclusions section.

When I wrecked this summer, my insurance guy was very specific with me that I should state that THE DEER HIT ME, not that I hit a deer. That way, it was covered under my comprehensive, not my collision. If it had gone against my collision, my rates would have gone way up. Got a $10,500 check for my 2012 that almost covered the purchase of the new $11,995 2015 replacement and my insurance didn't go up.
