Mirror Removal for End Bar Mirrors
07/06/16 1:02 PM

I know this isn't really an accessory topic, but since it's related to an accessory I figured I could post it here. So I've read a couple of posts on bar end mirrors and I'm really interested in going that route, but from what I've been researching the fairings on the 14 are pretty complex. What is the minimum amount of fairing that can be removed to get the OEM mirrors off? The internet isn't being very helpful when I search for "zx-14r mirror removal". The best I can seem to find is a youtube video about total fairing removal, but he doesn't actually pull anything off so I can't really tell what I need to pull off to get to the mirrors. Is there a guide somewhere that just gets me to the mirrors, or is it set up to have to remove a whole bunch just to get there? I don't want to remove any more than I have to.

All you need to remove are the ram air tube covers. If it's a Gen2, this is not exactly the same as the Gen1. If it's Gen1 just click the link below and scroll to ram air covers.
GEN1 FAIRING REMOVAL

Once the ram air covers are removed, you will see the two acorn nuts that secure each mirror to the inside of the top fairing. You can remove these with a wrench or perhaps a 1/4" drive ratchet. They will probably be quite tight. I don't recomend tightening that much when you install your mirror blocks or you could crack the fairing. Use blue LokTite and just go snug. Be careful not to drop them, there is also a washer under each nut and of course, be careful not to drop the mirror. Also, take care not to let the nose fall off. It's pretty much just stuck in the ram air inlet and that's all that holds it with the mirrors off. I'd do one side at a time just to be on the safe side.

I was hoping that's all it was! Wasn't sure if there were any other items in the way once you took those off. It's a 2016, so I guess it's a gen 2 (changed back in 2012, right?). Are there any significant differences or things to watch out for? I obviously don't want to do something stupid and crack the pieces or break a mount.

You might shove a rag underneath the nuts when you get the ram covers off.. The nuts have a way of completely disappearing when dropped :) At least when I drop them..

You should get the step by step on removing the covers. The Gen 1 has a little nob that drops in a fork bracket and the nob has been known to crack off. I think the Gen2 is a little more complicated yet.

So the ram cover on the 2016 was actually really easy. Just some side tabs after the hex bolts came out. Popped right out with no fuss after a little bending and went back in just as easy! Still waiting on my caps though...so going to have to do it again this weekend. Damn my impatience! ;P

Glad to hear they redesigned those covers. The Gen2 dash is a lot more finished looking too. I'm sure you already ordered but I would not bother with anything too fancy on the mirror caps. I have Vortex and the only problem I had was one of the studs broke and threaded out. Cheap. Color was off too. I think I paid about $60 because they were the only blue ones I could find.

I have the matte black version and was able to find a cheap pair of black caps for $10. Looking forward to getting them on and covering up the holes.

Do it ASAP if you're riding the bike like that. Remember, the mirrors hold the top fairing on.

The caps came in right after my dealer service. Popped them on yesterday and all good to go now!

Hey avarusbrightfyre, where'd you find your block off plates? All that i can find for under $50 are black engraved ones which i don't want. I'm looking for a clean look, plain black since i have the 2016 in matte black also.

Krator ZX14R cover. iPad won't let me copy link, but wasn't hard to find. It's the engraved one you don't want, but I think it looks pretty good. Gives a little contrast.
