tre with flies
09/06/09 11:12 PM

I know you think a tre is useless with flies out, but what about with flies in? I think you were asked this in the old forum. I don't want to pull the flies...yet.... and thought a GIPro Atre (tre with gear indicator) would be a perfect compromise. I know it won't be the same as flies-out, but how close is it with them locked open?

Smooth is what I'm looking for. I think the subs open a little late for my feel. The GIPro can be switched for "hard" or "soft" settings for gears 1-6 or 2-6, or off completely. I'm not doing any racing, just want the powerband lowered a little, and lose the off idle stumble. A jet/needle change fixed that on my ZX-11, I'm hoping a PC3 does the same for the 14.

I was a little confused by the hard/soft settings too. I sent an e-mail but haven't heard from them yet.

Are we still debating TREs on here, I thought we beat that horse to death years ago?

This is the answer I got from Healtech on the hard/soft settings on the GiPro.

"It's not an on/off state, the butterflies open gradually.
In the hard setting, the plates open faster.
We recommend to try both modes. Depending on other mods, sometimes the soft
setting works better."

This is why I was leaning toward the GiPro. 2-6th gear and a soft setting seems to make sense to me. Leave 1st alone, and bring the power earlier, but smoother 2nd on up. Then use a PC3 to smooth the whole thing out.

Sorry Kruz, but but my horse ain't quite dead yet. I read a lot of stuff about the Ivan TRE, but not much about the GiPro. Or I just missed it. I'm one of those guys that analyzes things to death before I jump. Can't ride yet anyway, so I might as well read.

That's cool, the TRE controversy has been going on for years, kinda funny really. I quit overanalyzing, "paralysis by analysis" mode sets in and you miss out on a lot. I just plugged the dam thing in and enjoy the ride, works for me.

from GiPro instructions:

The current TRE mode is displayed (blinking) for 3 seconds. The indication can be one
of the followings:
- : Normal Mode, TRE is not active
1 : TRE Active in 1-6 gears. Hard setting for ZX-10R (also for ZX-14 / ZZR1400
with secondary throttle plates removed)
2 : TRE Active in 1-6 gears. Softer setting for ZX-10R and ZX-14 / ZZR1400
3 : TRE Active in 1-6 gears. Hard setting for ZX-14 / ZZR1400
4 : TRE Active in 2-6 gears. Hard setting (above 1st) for ZX-14 / ZZR1400
Note: Please try all modes to see which works best for your bike. When the best
setting is obtained, PC3 remapping is recommended but not required.

Kruz; That's part of the problem. I can't ride yet, so I read, analyze, plan, and hopefully, get to plug in and ride before this season is gone. Just trying to decide if I should spend cash on a GiPro or PC3 first.

the ivan's tre (timing retard eliminator) does just what the name implies. by using a resistor that plugs into the wiring harness just above the shifter, it fools the computer into thinking the bike is in 6th gear all the time. thats why your gear indicator no longer works after you plug it in. in stock form, the computer neuters the low end power of the zx14 in gears 1-5 below about 6000rpms. it does this by retarding the timing which is also tied to the flies. as a result, the computer opens the "flies" or "secondary throttle valves" ever so gently for your safty and convienience softening the power hit. actually kawasaki did this as a form of cheap traction control to tame this beast. fearing some idiot with no experience would pull the trigger and wind up dead. you can pull the flies out but the computer will still retard the timing in the lower gears.

Smokum you said a bad word (Ivan). To some Ivan is snake oil with his TRE. I have the unmapped Ivan TRE on my 2008 but honestly could not say how well it works because I made 3 changes at one. All I know is that the bike is a lot better than what it was.
Welcome aboard..................and good luck with understanding Hub.

i too think the tre is a bad idea. i bought a tre (no flies) for my '06 14 and pulled the flies at the same time it was plugged in. i had more low end power below 6000rpm but lost my gear indicator which read "N" all the time. i didn't like that so i pulled the tre. i couldn't tell any difference. removing the flies seemed to do the same thing the tre did only without the loss of the gear indicator. i also have a pc3 with a good map , i blocked the plates on the valve covers as i was unable to get rid of the annoying decellaration crackeling otherwise, and i installed a set of yosh cf slipons and a bmc air filter. i did have to richen up the pc3 map in the 3000rpm range due to a lean flat spot.
oh, and thanks for the welcome.

smokemifugotem:
The other reason I was leaning toward the GiPro. It has it's own gear indicator, so you lose the stock gear indicator, but gain a more visible and faster responding one. Now I'm thinking a '08 ECU might be the way to go.

i just have to wonder why no one can seem to make one of these that doesn't interfere with the stock gear indicator. that is toro caca.

Thank you.

Below is Ivan's TRE. Not hard at all but the pin removal looks a tiny bit touchy.

If you have a GIPro, it might be a bit more involved with the LED gear indicator and programming selections but the basic connection to the GPS is probably the same.

ironheadmike just installed a GIPro. PM him or post on his thread.
