Most popular gearing for 14R
02/02/14 6:12 PM

Hi fellas,
I have a 2013 zx14 and have been down the strip on a couple of occasions.
My question is - what is the most popular combination of sprockets for the 1/4 mile on this model?
I understand the standard is 17/42 but after watching the youtube clip of Ricky Gadsons 8.99 run he said he dropped a couple of teeth off the rear. So this leads me to believe a 17/40 combination, does this sound right?

As I ride mainly on the street I would prefer to change just the rear sprocket for convenience.

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Shane

I'm running a 39 on the back. This combo is for calming down the front under HARD acceleration in first gear. I really don't think you would benefit from this combo if your just a street rider. Just my honest opinion.

Thanks Maverick,
I'm not worried about how the combo goes on the street as I will swap it back for that. Just wanting to achieve better E.T's down the 1/4.
17/40 would probably be a good starting point for stock wheelbase I'm guessing?

Cheers mate.

Yeah I actually have a Vortex 40t as well. I've been 8.99 on the current gear combo.

Im thinking of going 17/41....at stock 17/42 now with 9"-10" stretch..wonder how that will work? Got ecu flashed so limiters. Wonder if I'll get any more top end or if it will launch a lil smoother .

Casper you need more gear for that stretch bro. At the very least you need to be +2 in the back.

+2 was actually what I was thinking I needed. Mite be a little much for the street use tho. I'll have to try it out and see. Gonna need a new set of sprockets and chain soon anyway.

It won't be too much I promise. Personally I would run -1,+2 if I was stretched out.

Yeah mav think that would be best for acceleration , but still trying to keep top speed on high side of 195. Had that gearing on my zx10 and lost about 10mph on top. Zx14 has a bit more power so may not be an issue..lol

Mechanical top speed in 6th with a 17/44 (+2) combo and 11,500 limiter is 200 MPH.

Just my 2 cents. The last 3 weekends I have tried 3 different gear combo's.

First weekend was 16/42 which I set my personal record with
Second weekend 16/44 which was close but started to wheelie out of the hole, and weird it actually went the fastest mph my bike has been to date.
Third weekend 17/44 just to see how it would act. 60's were actually about right but 330' and 660' et was down.

Going back to 16/42 for our shootout this weekend, but may give 16/44 a try again, now that I have extra links I can add to my chain.
