LSL / Spiegler kit question
09/23/11 7:27 AM

Hello all,

I have a favor to ask of the LSL / Spiegler handlebar kit owners...

After installing the kit,
*ON AN UN-LOWERED BIKE*
forks were not raised or lowered...
aka "stock geometry"

what distance do you have from the top of the kit's new triple clamp to the top of the fork tubes?

in millimeters please

supporting pics would be gravy!

Thanks for any help!!!

I will check when I get home.

Since I did not loosen the lower fork clamp, and had it up on a pin stand (has a pin that goes in the bottom of the steering stem tube) I didn't worry about the amount sticking up above the top clamp.

You can only push the top clamp down so far, and when you torque to spec, its exactly where it should be. I just tapped mine down with a rubber mallet, staying close to the steering stem, and then tapped the outside ends at the fork tubes to make sure neither side was flexed, and torqued it all down.

She handles perfectly, and has been trouble-free.

Thanks for the reply privateer...
Here's some more detail:

I brought the (used) bike to the dealer directly after my purchase.

There's a Vortex adjustable lowering link on the bike.
The P/O stated he went back and forth experimenting with height.
The rear is currently set at the 'stock height' position. That's how he sold it to me.

Never got to verify if he reset the front-end to stock height as well...

We didn't think to measure the front (with the clip-ons) until after the entire LSL kit was put on.

It may have been sold to me with a lowered front end. Maybe.

So- as it sits, I'd like to get a reference dimension of what 'stock' would be with LSL in place.

Thanks for checking up on it, mucho appreciated!

Gonna have to wait longer, possibly. I'm packing for a weekend ride with the mc and I want to get to bed early so I can get up early, get in rain suit if necessary, get gas, put enzyme in gas, and be in parking lot 5 minutes before anyone else arrives.

And I don't have anyway to measure in milimeters, my electronic calipers read all SAE (inches).

SAE is fine... can convert mathematically.
Thanks again for any help, if/when you do...

Excellent! Thanks for taking the time to do that B-A.
I'll call the dealer now and give the measurements to the mechanic to compare numbers...

He measured for me on the spot.
Said it's at 26.3 mm.
I guess close enough to stock then, no need to raise the front end from there, eh?
It's not like it's 10 or 20 or 30 mm off...

When you install the ignition switch, you need to watch as you lower the clamp onto the forks. The inner section of the bottom of the ignition switch will ride over the steering head(lower part)on the frame(as you turn the bars right and left). If the ignition switch is rubbing on the frame there...you've pushed down too far.Go out and see what I mean. The switch bottom will be very close to rubbing...but it will be clearing the cast part of the frame there. You stop pushing down at that critical point....and tighten your clamp bolts. You can measure either side from the top edge of the clamp to the flat flange on the fork tube top once you have it down as I mentioned. Then just make sure both sides are the same measurement. You must have the ignition(switch) installed and in place to do this on the new LSL clamp BEFORE you lower the clamp onto the fork tubes.Unless someone else did it differently.Just don't want to have ya put it all together on there and have a problem with the steering of the bike. You probably wouldn't notice it hitting with the 'thrill' of having installed your latest mod! ...although you MIGHT end up with a shorted out ignition with no idea what happened!

I can't remember if that was in the instructions or not.But I think they had the steps as installing the ignition to the clamp, then mounting the clamp on the bike. Not sure if they said anything about the bottom clearance though. Those silver 'spacers' are supposed to extend the ignition to the acceptable length, but I'd make sure after you get er on the fork tubes.

yo 98 was in the garage today and looking at the clearance between the ignition switch and the frame work and have approx 25mm clearance, now the bit that hurts, looking at the forks through the yoke I checked how much is sticking through and it's 26mm not the 21.8mm I said before, sorry about the discrepancy, must have been on the drink

blue: thanks for the tip... I called mechanic, then he went to be xtra sure clearances were OK.

BA: ha! No worries, the #'s seemed close enough anyway. I do appreciate the double-checkup :)

Going on my 3rd week of ownership, and haven't ridden it yet... I am freaking out.
Hopefully done by the weekend... I'll post up pics when I get her back in my arms.
