First Knee Puck Down !!!!!
07/26/16 1:25 PM

Been riding for some years and even been to the track a few times but never succeeded in getting the knee puck to touch the ground until yesterday.

Guess practice makes it. Damn it feels good to finally scrape a puck !!! A feeling I'll never forget.

What about you guys? What you've tried but not quite got the knee down? Man I've tried but it's several factors that come together for it to work. Good body positioning being one of them.

AWESOME! All I've tried is looking and it appears my knee is close but apparently not close enough. I don't even worry about it anymore. Maybe I should try a little harder. Problem I see is, the mor eyou hang off, the less you need to lean the bike....sorta cancels one another out. I see pics of people in Lee Parks' book with blocks of foam taped to their knees. That seeems like a good place to start.

congrats on the knee slide.

Hey Rook, thanks ! You're absolutely correct. The more you hang off, the less your leaning the bike and the more you're getting a bigger contact patch.

It took some getting used to the lean angle and several factors that have to come together for it to work. i.e. using the heel guard to keep your boot toe nice and firm, pointing the knee down, bringing shoulders down, head into mirror, relaxing the outside arm on the tank and that 45 degree angle lean that brings you closer to scrape that puck.

Honestly for a long time it was my fear that used to kick in because I always felt like the bike was going to tip over or low side but not true if all the above that I'd mentioned, comes together.

I've seen guys go really low but not hanging off the bike so they are at very high risk of a low slide. Oh by the way, hooking or locking the leg onto the bottom of the tank/upper part of seat is also another big factor so you don't feel like you're going to fall over.

Try it and let me if it works.

Good Luck !

I raced for 12 years, finishing in the top 3 of my class and almost NEVER put my knee down. It was only in my last year that I would regularly put a knee down around turn 2 and the carousel at Infineon Raceway. In fact I put my knee down exiting that turn one day... followed by my hip, my shoulder, and my entire left side! DOH!!!

^ Wow !! well in the top 3...you're definitely fast ! Well I guess scraping pucks can slow a rider down focusing on doing that.

You had a spill in turn 2? hope you're ok ...

Hah, no Wills, I crashed at the exit from the carousel. I was chasing down a guy and decided I'd get him at the entrance to turn 7. So I needed a great drive out of the carousel. I went in faster than ever, it's a LONG downhill left, and where it meets the drag strip there is a seam in the pavement. I SHOULD have picked up the throttle at the same place I normally do but, because of the extra speed, I waited. The front hit the seam, starting tank slapping and before I could say "SHIT!" inside my helmet I was down. No injuries and minimal damage to the bike. About 80 mph I'm guessing.
Looking back it was kind of fun....
