exhaust leak
09/07/09 7:03 PM

So I am in the process of installing....well i have already installed and removed the Muzzy m14/10 system but seems the 1st header on the right hand side has a leak!!! i have tighten this thing as much as I can!!!

WHATS THE PROBLEM????

I did not purchase new gaskets as I was told I wouldn't need them because I have yet to reach 1k miles though I am really close!!!!

Is there a specific pattern to putting these things on??? please let me know as I was going to order new gaskets in the morning but if I don't have to and all I need to do is change my install technique I would rather do that?!?!?!

Thank you!!!

It's alwaysw good to put on new gaskets. But the nuts only torque to25 ftlbs! If you have tightened them much beyond that it probably flattened the copper rings (gaskets) beyond proper function.
Also look where the headder and midpipe join. If you see any little V shaped caarbon deposit, it is pointing to a leak.
My Muzzy slip ons use the stock gasket to join to the headder. I would replace that too if you have one. The clamp bolts get tightened to 13 ftlbs.
I can't ever find these common parts at the dealership. I usually order on line. UPS is the new snail mail!

Good luck

I put in new gaskets but still had leaks till I used some high temp copper sealant at all joints, just a little is all it takes.. No more leaks!

To much to list!

proper torque on the head bolts is important if you over torque you can break the bolts of the head and always use new gaskets. I put a little bit of grease on each gasket to hold it in place in the head while you place the header into position, just makes life easier.

lets not forget, you can also bend the flanges on the header.

new gaskets should take care of it. Although, i am still using the stock (13k mile) gaskets on mine.. Had the whole system off 7-8 times..

If the nuts were overtorqued the copper ring gaskets would be compressed more than if tightened to normal torque. So If you back the nuts off to get back to proper torque, after overtightening, the gaskets would not have a truly tight seal, they'd be too squished.
I squeezed the copper rings with my thumb and forefinger to make them ever slightly out of round. That caused just enough binding when put in the block to hold them in until I got the headder up there.
I always use new gaskets because I want the assurity that I woln't have to disassemble the item again on that account! I'm lazy.

Hey everyone thanks for all the info!!

I ordered the rings from Schnitz yesterday with 1 day shipping!!! they arrived this morning just after 10am, I went and bought the copper sealent, and a torque wrench!!! took the radiator off that way I could easily get to the bolts and put her all back together!!!

started her up and she sounds perfect no more air rushing sound!!!!

Thanks again!!!

@slowninja didn't know those flanges could be bent!!! can they be unbent??? what happens if they are bent???

I'm not sayin i've seen them bent, just that they could be if they were way overtorqued.

Copper sealant sounds like a great idea for sealing the joints in the pipes. Only problem is the Tsukigi system fit so tight, I could barely get the pipes together without sticky sealant. I actually had to assemble the header through the collector before bolting the thing on. There was no way I was going to get those pipes slid together hanging under the bike.
