Inexpensive Cell Phone Mount
04/18/20 3:48 PM

Hi all,
Just picked up my bike yesterday and started to tackle some common issues, such as lack of storage space. I had a leftover cell phone mount kit from my last bike which costs all of $2 on ebay and tried to see if i could figure a way to make it work. Well after quickly realizing that it would be impossible to mount it as designed due to lack of real estate on the handlebars, I decided on the following:
- i used the clip part of the mount without the ball/handlebar mount piece.
- i found a piece of thin metal tubing that fits perfectly in the handlebar shaft
- i found a leftover piece of fuel line from another bike that fits tightly wedged inside the metal tube
- insert fuel line hose into metal tube
- insert metal tube into clip section and tighten plastic nut until metal tube doesnt move
- insert into handlebar shaft
- enjoy

It is very sturdy, can be oriented in any position and road tested to highway speed.. interestingly this setup is must sturdier than my last setup where it was mounted to my handlebar of my last bike and would move whenever i hit a pothole or large enough bump in the road.. i figure since its effectively a solid mount and protected by the windscreen.

I like to be creative and cost-conscience where possible so stay tuned for other creative mods... next stop, some type of toolbag mount to hold knick-knacks instead of wedging things under the seat.

Looks good tkng99. Always handy to come up with frugal solutions to a problem. I checked ebay and there is something equivalent for about $16US from China. The dilemma I have is that I don't want to take my eyes off the road when riding my bike for a second so my phone stays in my pocket and my GPS in my tank bag only to be pulled out when I pull over. A bad situation can just come up too fast for my liking...

Although motorcycles have broken my bones, they have greatly improved my quality of life. A fair trade...

I hear you.. The solution that works for me for hearing GPS directions and music without taking my eyes off the road is a set of Bluetooth helmet speakers that I recently bought which allows me to adjust song playing/volume and listen to directions and also take calls while riding.

Tank Bags used to be the Hot Ticket. Get a newer model that mounts on the Gas Cap Ring. Those are more expensive.
I've got a mini Rigg Nelson (CL-1025 ST). I use straps around the stem in front and Magnet pads in the back. I just undo the pads and swing the bag forward to fuel.
I carry bottled water, flashlight, camera, flip-phone, rainsuit in mine. Map on top.

Tank bags are the way to go. I have a SW Motech Evo Sport tank bag that mounts to the gas cap ring like doubleD said above: https://twistedthrottle.com/shop/luggage/tank-bags-accessories/tank-bags/sw-motech-evo-sport-tank-bag-14-21-l-for-evo-tank-ring-black-grey/ . Very handy and nothing touches the paint :)
