I Hate @!#$% ChipSeal!!!
06/15/19 10:55 AM

They just destroyed my favorite twisty road with chipseal, ruined a perfectly good road. You can't tell where the loose gravel is cause the entire road is now overlayed with gravel aggregate and I'll be lucky to get 1000 miles out of a rear tire now due to abrasive edges to the aggregate. This stuff is terrible!

That's one big piece of the puzzle gone. The other is the house. I'd think about accepting the new job offer if they will agree to buy your house. Buy a new house with cash.

Ha!
Sad to hear but funny to read this.

Same thing happened to a road that was a riding institution just out of Sydney Australia called the Old Pacific Highway.

I made a Hitler video about it back then...

Hitler learns the Old Pacific Highway has been resurfaced

I weep with you. We have Skyline. It was THE main road for riders in our area. It's where the famous Alice's Restaurant is. It used to be pretty decent. A few bumps here and there. Then, I suspect to discourage bikes, they chip sealed it. Immediately after, a husband and wife crashed their Goldwing in the loose gravel. I hope they sued the county. They got so many complaints that they sealed OVER the chipseal. Now, the surface is ok but the bumps are HORRENDOUS. Thank Dog they haven't chip sealed any of the feeder roads. Some of them are fantastic. Oh, and now they are starting to lay down smooth, creamy asphalt. I suspect as a result of the rich fucks who live up there complaining about their Ferraris getting scratched or shocks blown.

They just topped 2 miles of old, tar-snaked asphalt going by my house with 'sugar coat" a 1/4" thick, small-aggregate sealer. Covered the snakes, cracks and leveled some bumps. This stuff should be used everywhere instead of chip-seal.
Rough and tacky, no dust and no gravel. Goes on hot and cures in a couple of hours. No residual oil after a rain like fresh blacktop. Love it.

@Yannih, funny video and kind of mirrored my thoughts, why destroy a perfectly smooth road with an abrasive overlay of aggregate that features high tire wear and loose stones as it's principal features? I saw another video of Old Pacific Highway and it looked like the bikes were really moving through there before they layed down the new surface. Might have been to slow the bikes down.

We had an absolute perfect road surface back in September of 2016 when they completed the new asphalt on the local FM (Farm to Market), thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The problem out here is the big trucks cut across north of DFW to avoid the high traffic areas of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and wreaked havoc on the new FM road surface. The surface just wont take the pounding of 70,000 lb vehicles. By November 2017 they already had cracks emerging and sent twenty trucks out in a single day to lay down tar snakes. It almost seems they knew exactly what they were doing to mess things up for the bikes, laying tar ribbons down right through the best lines in the corners. Several sport bike crashes occurred when they hit the tar snakes early in the morning and they were still slick with dew. I decided to turn a negative into a positive, changed my lines up to avoid the tar and used them as braking markers and turn in points, apex markers etc. and learned to avoid. Pretty soon I was comfortable resuming a fast pace. The chip and seal job is scary, they broomed the road after finishing the job on Tuesday but I noticed there is still some residual loose stuff that can get the rear end squirming. I rode the 959 yesterday morning with TC turned up to level 3 and a brand new Pirelli Super Corsa SP on the rear and noticed the traction was OK but not as grippy as before. Hopefully it will wear in in a few months and the traction levels will return. In the meantime, there is noticeably more road vibration coming up through the bars and pegs and my new track tires (soft) are wearing rapidly due to the abrasion effects.

@ Danno, in theory the aggregate should improve traction in the corners due to the mechanical interaction of rubber and road surface but the distance between the points of tire contact completely changes the feel when really loading up the tires. I'll adapt, I have no choice; but it is a major aggravation for now and a safety concern.

In Montana, presumably to improve frozen weather traction, they use a chip seal you'd swear was nearly grade 8. Very rough and hard on tires in the warmer weather, but traction on a bike is pretty good. They use enough asphalt in the seal component that it locks the gravel in place. No dust or loose chat to put you on yer ass.

The 'sugar coat' is something they formerly used only on bridge decks so as not to add a lot of pavement weight when doing new blacktop. Remains to be seen how it gets run in and lasts.

Hi Danno, I just drove out there in my car, got out and walked a few of the corners to see just what I am up against.

I didn't see a lot of loose stones, just a few lying on top of the road surface but if you hit one at full lean, you could have a bit of an anxious moment especially on the front. There is a very soft asphalt layer beneath the aggregate stones and the stones are pretty widely spaced in some spots, literally two inches between stones. I stuck my finger in the black goo between some of the stones and it moved easily under my finger pressure, hopefully it will harden up as it ages. I noted several complete bare spots near the center line where there was nothing but the black goo with no stones at all, this is like hitting a giant tar snake. Will really need to pay close attention to line selection in the corners.

Over time, as the stones get pressed into the base asphalt layer and the tar hardens, things may stabilize but for now I thing they screwed up a really good road.

Why couldn't they just spray asphalt and then put a fine coating of sand on top and roll it in, would be much smoother and more uniform?

Yea, this road is destroyed, just came back from a ride where I tried to step up the pace and the tires are slipping and grabbing when you load it up in the corners. Corner speed is a good ten mile per hour slower and scary, this just isn't fun anymore. I can also see my brand new Super Corsa SP rear tire evaporating from the sharp edged rocks in the road surface. What's not to love here, they took a perfectly smooth road and turned into a rough riding, slip and slide that eats rubber?

Something else for the motorcycle industry to lobby against.

... ie increasing the prices of bikes.

They’re doing it more and more here in Indiana also. Higher taxes...cut-corner infrastructure!!
