help needed asap
06/11/16 9:19 PM

So I was removing my gas cap and there was a rubber gromet that fell out of the gas cap assembly and into my gas tank. So now I'm trying to figure out what the best course of action would be, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The cap was OEM?

The pump filter sock won't allow the grommet to cause any foreseeable problems but the cap has valuable fuel management systems. You must identify what dropped into your fuel tank: pics/snaps of what went missing and your other halfs cleavage would prove invaluable.

It was the oem gas cap. There is a rubber gromet that connects to the assembly, when I pulled the cap out it fell into the tank.

I looked it up, it's a fuel cap seal.

If you can see the rubber grommet, maybe you can use a Flex-Cable Pick Up tool to retrieve it. Be careful not to damage the fuel pump float. Or you can remove the fuel tank and fuel pump to retrieved it. Good luck.

Option 1:
Buy the part, call it a day. I'm going to guess that part cannot be sucked up the pump so it's safe. And is the rubber going to decompose and may clog the filter, or may never decompose we think gas line, right?
Option 2:
Pull the plastic, pull the tank, pump the gas out, remove fuel pump, retrieve grommet.

You must be talking about the little O-ringish thing that seals the overflow vent. I'm sure it must be very fuel resistant. That would bug the crap out of me but I'd just throw an aftermarket cap on and remove the fuel pump in winter. Sucks when little stuff causes big work.

Think of this, If that happened at the dealership shop, they wouldn't say a word.

...but if you are reinstalling the OEM cap, better replace the o-ring thing.

I wouldn't mess with it. Removing the tank is always a risky proposition. You scratch it or dent it or do something stupid you think you regret dropping an o-ring into the tank? I'd at least wait until you NEED to remove the tank for some other reason, like valve clearance inspection. That seals meant to last the life of the bike its going to be fuel resistant just the same as all the other seals that can contact fuel. If it's inside there a couple years, ain't going to hurt anything.

Also if you remove the fuel pump you'll most likely want any gaskets and that sort of thing to replace the original. Other's might be able to offer clearer advice as to if it's a must replace to avoid future leaks.

Also remember about grounding and that sort of thing especially if you're going to be sticking metal objects inside the tank. It's the kind of thing that ends up in the news, "man burns face off and burns down garage trying to retrieve o-ring from inside motorcycle tank."

No sir, you made a dumb mistake. The only thing worse would be to compound that dumb mistake with more dumb mistakes.

Vic, thanks for the advice. My bike has to go to the shop on Tuesday for service and I will ask them their opinion on the matter. I was just concerned that I wouldn't be able to start the bike without getting that gromet out of there.

Yeah, I'd wait like Vic said but if you decide to remove the tank, I have a turial about that and it will probably apply to the Gen2 same as Gen1. I think I put a warning about that little O-ring in my gas cap tutorial but even if you are careful, it could be difficult to avoid dropping it. I was lucky to have mine stick to the gas cap assy when I removed it.

I wouldn't be able to start the bike without getting that gromet out of there.

I'm with Rook and Vic on this.
1. No rot, no catching of a part that big into the pump.
2. That is the pipe up top-to gas cap diaphragm-to canister capture. You can see the rain drain/gas overfill drain tube hole [welded off to the side] once you left the cap up and away to show the second steel tube(s) inside the tank that ends out of the back to the tank.
3. You just broke the sealed vent to atmosphere. No problem running at all. Just dust and dirt to drop in, circulate around the hole as the vapor tacks on and around the exposed hole.
4. You'd break the seal of the fuel pump body's oring, over tighten the tank housing screws. Might have to replace that [oring] as book says to do for safety reasons.
5. No need to remove tank for servicing the valves.
6. Good luck!

Unless you remove T-bodies which I think you will probably need to on the Gen2.

I competely agree with Rook, Vic and Hub.

But...

If it were me I would just have to get that O ring out. No matter what the inconvenience was.
It would constantly play on my mind that something was not as it should be on my bike. I would always be thinking about it.
Once it was corrected I could relax again.

Unfortunately thats just me.

Update, taking my bike to the dealership in the morning. I'm having some servicing done, they are going to remove the tank and get the gromet out. I was going to tackle job myself but time is not on my side. Thanks to all that responded.

I would dab a bit of clear nail polish on tank bolts , then check later to see if they pulled tank..just because..:)
The right kind of vacuum might just suck that lil grommet right up..

Good advise chrly!
Dealers are dodgy fucks and the quicker one realises this the better for your bike...

What do dealer mechanics do with tanks when they remove them?

What's the best way to support a 14's tank if you have to work on the fuel pump?

Update, I'm on my way to the dealership to pick up my bike. They charged me 80.00 dollars to remove the tank and retrieve the gromet. So the moral of the story is always procede cautiously when dealing with your gas tank.

x2 That would bug the absolute heck out of me.

This reminds me of the screws that fell in the area between the rear of the gas tank and the panel in front of the rear wheel. My saga: http://zx14ninjaforum.com/messages.cfm?threadid=93C95CB2-99C1-67D9-7C73E218DAA8987E I finally did get 'em, and jumped around for joy when I did.

Personally, I think the risk of seeing man cleave is worth the potential reward of seeing female cleave.
