wheel bearing question
07/03/10 7:09 PM

My rims were powder coated gold by the previous owner so the bearings have been changed. I removed the rear today to change the tire and noticed the rotor side bearing looks like a typical m/c bearing with the orange dust seal around it but the sprocket side is a standard bearing that you can actually see the grease and ball bearings in. Is this normal for this bike? There is no play in the bearing and it seems in good shape. I didnt know if it was ok and I needed to just put some extra grease in or if I should have it changed. I attached pictures of both sides. I am trying to get the bike ready for my 1500 mile trip. The bike has 10k miles on it and the bearing has probably 6k.

If your seal is in Good shape all will be fine. My cush drive bearing was the same as yours.

Once you put that spacer in on the left side(sprocket side)it will effectively create a sealed bearing.Same with the rotor side.Just make sure ya get those spacers in the correct side...they are different.

Thanks guys. I will put it back together today after getting the tire mounted. I emailed the original owner and he said he replaced them with factory bearings.

I prefer sealed wheel bearings.
However, I'm not concerned about the large unsealed ball bearing on the left; the wheel hub seal will keep dirt out of it.
When I remove the rear wheel, I always visually check that bearing to be sure that during wheel removal no dirt got
into it.
