Oil & Engine Light
12/30/17 2:33 PM

Came back from a short ride, (1st ride after first oil change) after I shut off the bike with key still on, oil and engine light stay on. And after I turn it off and turn back on they still come on. But when I start the bike they go off. Is this something I need to be concerned about. I never noticed these lights before.

No..not to worry.Just shows there's no oil flow(pressure)going on.Long as they go out right after startup, you're fine.I found after an oil change, until the engine cranking senses oil pressure building throughout the motor,it won't start.Kinda nice little deal.I suppose if there's a catastrophic loss of oil,the motor would automatically shut off as well?Kinda like the tipover sensor.

Wire/switch/plunger wise...
No pressure = Switch is ground/wire is hot/plunger touches wire to complete the circuit (light goes on).
Pressurized = Oil pressure moves plunger away from switch wire and breaks the complete circuit (light goes off).

Here's video of what is supposed to happen to the gen1. Oil light definitely because that tells you when your oil pressure is damned near nothing (and that's why it is of limited value should you experoence a drastic drop in oil pressure while riding), Engine light, I think I have seen that on too but appears as though I normally do not have it. As long as they go off at startup. The engine light might come on with the ignition if the motor is hot.

I have been looking at the service manual and it states if the yellow engine light comes on when key is turned on it is a fuel (DFI) problem. Which could be a number of issues. going to put some miles on her and see if it stops.

The fuel pump relay is the only fuel related thing I can think of that comes on with the ignition. See if it goes away. I almost swear I saw my engine light come on with the key when the bike was new and I was alarmed too. I think I remember calling the dealership about this. I also think I have read other threads about this situation over the years.

Here's another thing I think: if you turn the key off and then on a couple times, the fuel pump might not cycle every time. I don't know why. That might be the cause of your warning light but I don't believe it's a problem. My fuel pump circulates fine and I don't see the engine light but I generally don't turn the key on / off more than once.

I would imagine the engine lamp is connected to the oil sensor some way...(also dfi).Long as it's going out it's fine.I turn my key on...yellow engine lamp is lit along with oil lamp.Totally okay.I did have at one point the engine lamp lighting up and staying on.I cycled the key,it stopped doing that.Probably just a minor burp in the ECU or something. No codes.

Thanks Rookster.I know...it's just some more waiting. Can't really do anything else about any of this.Aug,Sept,Oct,and November...usually decent riding weather.Light snow during those months but quickly clears.
