Billet clutch basket
06/20/19 11:32 AM

Has anyone added a billet clutch basket recently? It looks like Hays lightweight billet clutch basket would shave almost 1.5# off the stock clutch weight. I'm sure this would help the shifting speed, just curious about how much harder this might be to launch?

Interesting but I would have to weight the stock basket. From memory, I don't think it weighed much more than a pound and a half. The plates are the heavy part. You get race fiber, I think they will be a lot lighter but you will need to change them out after a few hours of use.

I was looking at metal matrix steels. That should drop the clutch pack weight significantly without dramatically changing clutch engagement. However metal matrix material is prone to dropping very sharp slivers of ceramic material during use, and that's not something that our filters were designed to stop..

Do you have a link to lighter clutch fibers?

No link, but I considered replacing my stock fibers with racing clutch fibers by Barnet. Hub told me they are made of carboard and work great until they become saturated with oil and disintegrate. You don't have them in long enough to disintegrate if you are really racing. I presume they are light weight if they are totally made of carboard but for street use, no way would I bother changing that often.

Back to looking at this again. Hopefully we'll have some new clutch packs to try this month..

Sorry for the slow response. We are around 430#, 230 hp. I just need a rider mod and it might be a dangerous package.

Most of the bodywork is still stock, and we still have the stock gas tank. We haven't cut into the stock wiring harness yet, and the suspension is mostly stock. Everything else has been modified or changed.

We haven't cut into the stock wiring harness yet..

Why cut anything off the wire harness? It's still a wire out the end of the connector, right? Safety wire jammed at the back of the connector, thru the orange weatherpac rubber; ohm the prong and safety wire with goop glue on the safety wire and the wire coming out you are using. Solder a wire on the safety wire = No harness was tampered with.

You get the idea about soldering the wire on the safety wire first, then poke it in the weatherpac, pin check, glue down, let dry, pin check again. I'm done with the mod, I pull the safety wire out, sell the bike, someone looks over the wiring, nothing points to the butcher on the block can't meguyveer up.
