I ordered the Factory Pro Star Shift and am going to install it this weekend. I have to pull the clutch basket out to do so. The install procedure makes it seem like I dont have to drain the oil to do so. I think if the bike is ~ level on stands I have to dump some oil. My question is, if I keep the bike on the kick stand and its leaned over to the left side will that keep the oil from running out when the clutch cover is removed??

I dont need to change the oil for another 1000 miles so if I can get away with not dumping it I would like not to

Why not just drain into clean container and then pore back in when completed?

Every bike I've worked on clutch side I have been able to not drain
on kickstand, but even then I'd now drain and pore back to avoid any
unnecessary mess.

** Will be interesting to hear what you think about the shift star. Something
I've been thinking about doing as well.

You dont have to drain the oil if you keep the bike on the kick stand.

The only reason I dont drain is I dont have a nice clean pan, all of my oil pans are old and full of crap. But I think I will buy one so I eliminate the issue before I start.

GRN has one and his post convinced me to do this mod. I will post my assessment after the change.

If I recall,the shift shaft has to come out.Which leaves a nice big hole on the kickstand side.I would drain first Crude.Ask me how I know ;)

I think you'll like this little mod.It WILL NOT remove the 1st gear clunk however.Maybe soften it a bit...but that's it.You will be able to upshift and downshift clutchlessly however.Just slightly close the throttle.It'll click right in.

Make sure when you remove the small bolt holding that star in there you have a straight and strong allen.With sharp corners.It'll be REALLY tight.

Maybe I'm WAAAAY out in left field on this one... but couldn't you just wait until the oil needs changed in 1000 miles then change the oil AND install the star at the same time?

I only put 2K miles a yr on the bike so I don't want to wait until next yr - I want my mods and I want them NOW

Well that makes more sense, what about lining your oil drain pan with a thick garbage bag to keep the oil clean, then elevate the pan and siphon it back into the bike using a bit of plastic hose and just top up the last bit that you can't get out? Obviously drain the bike when the oil is cold.

I hang/prop my drain pan for a day or 2 after an oil change to let as much as possible drain out after an oil change, there is still dirt/crap in the pan but it wouldn't be too hard for me to clean it to save the oil so you could also try something along those lines. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised that after you see what the oil looks like you might just end up replacing it anyways...

If you but the bike on a jack stand or side stand it will only leak maybe a small amount of oil. Best to uses center stand or rear wheel stand as it keeps the bike level somewhat. may leak about a 1/4 quart at most.
GRN it can actually be done with out removing the shift shat. ask me how I know. LOL
