what is that coil on the rad hose for?

You know the one that goes from the radiator to the water pump? I always thought it was some sort of temperature sensor but there are no wires or switches on it. Any ideas what it might be for? Just curious.

Called a, "spring tube guard;" rubs up against a fairing with the spring rolling over many surfaces, catching or stops what might rub thru the rubber hose if the spring was not there.
