Adding power outlets
04/14/09 9:38 AM

Feeling the need to have a radar detector - added a hard wire for that, then decided to add a 12v outlet since half the bike was apart anyway - the tank had to be lifted to run the wires with the main harness that runs from back to front.

Tied both into the rear light power and grounded them separately to the frame, using a 2amp inline fuse for the radar detector. Proudly I can charge my ipod and run the detector at the same time! Wow, there's not much free space for running the wires...

Here's the pics of how it turned out. This 12v outlet is designed for a boat so is closed to the weather. There's so much cowling I figured this would work ok - it sticks out quite a bit below, but this spot had enough clearance behind.

Here's how the radar detector sits.

I was just going to do a two pin sa plug like what my air compressor plugs into and secure it in that same area. I have a gps I would like to charge going down the road and maybe the cell phone if needed.
This could be a possibilty

Lost in TX and I dont want to be found ,
2012Yamaha Tenere 1200 for really wandering off the beaten path
2005 GL1800 Sold to another to enjoy
2006 ST1300 Gone but not forgotten
2009 ZX14 Also gone and will be replaced someday
some of the best of both worlds

Iceman,
it is a great idea. Take a heat gun to that 12V sticker and remove it to give it a "stealth" look. The white is too bright.
I do like the concept because it opens up a lot of options. I rigged a temporary solution under the seat last year to power my GPS on a long trip but I need to get a permanant solution in place.

I just look like this!

Nice job Iceman. Is that the new Escort 9500IX you have mounted? If so...how well does it perform?

Hi CoolWhip, it is the new escort. Its got some great sensitivity and on my first run likely saved me a ticket, although there was lots of traffic around. It stayed on the windscreen through the ride but fell off when i crossed a railway track so - I glued the suction cups onto the stock windscreen. i'll try that, may be going to a double bubble later this season. The 9500ix has an earphone jack and tons of volume so it seems really good so far. Not sure how well it will work on cops behind - time will tell!

Hey Iceman. Well, I am convinced enough! I just ordered the 9500IX. It's been getting rave reviews from the rags & riders as well. I am installing it on a Techmount (stem mount) with quick-release adapter. I will be funneling in the sound with a Belkin Rockstar using my ER6Is. That way, I can listen to my MP3s & hear the poopoo at the same time! LOL.

As an update, I registered my detector online, updated the traffic light/speed trap database and have an intersection with Ka radar near me that is brand new. Third time through the intersection the 9500ix updates itself and stores the location of that intersection with a fixed radar location.

Its cool to roll along and before you get to an intersection have a voice in your ear warn you of a traffic light camera ahead...

Hi Iceman. I received my IX. Nice unit. Yes, I agree, I like the idea of updating the database for traffic light/speed traps. Cool that the firmware can be updated as well.

I mounted it to my Techmount. I noticed in the manual it says not to mount it behind tinted windshields and make sure it is level. I have mine behind a dark-tinted double-bubble. Do you think that will have much affect on its sensitivity?

The sensitivity has been great behind the stock windshield. I'd bet their just trying to keep the rep of the 9500ix high since its claimed to be the current leader. Let us know if it doesn't work so well!!!!!

Though I'd update - the radar detector is a little heavy and tends to bend the hanger and then point more skyward than perfectly horizontal. So, I glued a piece of foam just below the suction cups of the holder. The foam pushes down on the front edge of the body of the radar detector, plus cushions it during bumps - the bending of the hanger has stopped.

Hey Ice...here's a quick update as well. The IX has paid itself off! I ran into 4 donut munchers on a 10 mile section of "letter road" last Sunday. Of course being Memorial Day weekend had a lot to do with that. It seemed that the poopoo was out to get us. The first one was hiding in the weeds and must have been pissed he didn't get us. The others intercepted our path driving in the opposing lane taking radar. It was almost as if the first cop in the weeds radioed the others trying to catch us on bad behavior. Each time, I was warned by the IX before they even saw us. Enough time to slow down for each LEO encounter.

Now, I am just waiting on an AC/DC converter so I can update the IX software/firmware next to my desktop. I have a SLR USB cord that will work for communications between the IX and my computer.
