Ceramic Coating Headers
06/20/15 5:22 AM

Sending my headers off to Performance Coatings, hope this will cool down my rides.

It should work
The only thing is you can't do titanium pipes

and 204.5 in the mile.
Now the Turbo 14R - best of 223.1 in the mile and 224.6 in the 1.5

The coating won't adhere?

You can coat titanium but NEVER paint it, will burn off and cause the metal to crack. Titanium is used a lot for weight savings and coating it causes you to lose that advantage, but yes it can be coated. The one thing you can't coat is magnesium, low flash point will cause it to burn when overheated.

Interesting concept, trying to cool exhaust headers. Not sure if you're going to be able to feel much difference. Say the coating reduces the outer temp of the header from 400 to 300 degrees... still damn hot!

You can ceramic-coat titanium. My Brock's CT Meg is fully ceramic coated and its all Titanium. Makes a huge difference in temp reduction as well. Heres a couple pics.

Your exhaust looks awesome, good to hear there is a temp. difference.

Are they coating the inside and outside of the pipes, or just the outside?

Performance coatings apply the ceramic on both outside and inside.

Performance Coatings offers high heat ceramic coatings capable of withstanding exhaust gas temperatures of 1300° F in our Chromex finish and over 2000° F in our Satin finishes. These coatings possess excellent thermal barrier characteristics, providing a dramatic reduction in radiated heat. This means reduced under-hood temperatures, accelerated exhaust gas velocity and a longer life expectancy for the entire exhaust system, not to mention their chemical and corrosion resistance.

All pieces are first sandblasted with garnet and walnut shell media inside and out to ensure the removal of any foreign matter that could impede proper application, and then re-blasted with aluminum oxide to give the surface the perfect tooth for the coating to adhere. All pieces are then coated inside and out to seal in the metal, protecting them from rust and corrosion, and giving them the best possible performance properties.

ZX14rider, did you notice any difference in the engine temp after the ceramic coating? Thermal load is going somewhere? I know some will go out the pipe but I would also expect the head temp to increase.

I would expect that almost all of the heat would go out the pipe now, the head will get heated up by the exhaust gas regardless simply because that's where the exhaust is expelled from (and would be the hottest). If you believe the claim "accelerated exhaust gas velocity" you could even argue there might be an extremely slight reduction in head temperature.

Data? in the form of delta temp profile before and after ceramic coating was my question, everything else is just an opinion.

The other bit is just marketing crap based on the smoother surface flowing more gas, probably hard to measure or model a difference.

Okay, what I didn't know is that the INSIDE of the pipe is also coated.
So that obviously decreases the inside diameter and it's respected volume.
Knowing that would there be a decrease in performance due to that?
or is it nullified because of the increased scavenged effect?
More questions I don't have answers to
