Tail light install
09/08/12 5:23 PM

Didn't see that this had been done before, thought I'd contribute something to the forum...

Remove the tail fairings (see Fairings Removal Sticky)

Here are the screws...

Remove screws (3) holding tail light in place...1 top, 2 on sides. A long thin Phillips will fit through the subframe. I removed the bolts in the way for easier access...

Pull the tail light straight out, cannabalize the rubber grommet from the OEM if your aftermarket one doesn't come with one (mine didn't).

When putting on the new light, I used a bead of black silicone to seal the gap between the light and the undertail tray (the OEM light uses a strip of foam).

Finished product with black silicone...

Hope this helps!

Which aftermarket taillight did you use? Was it plug and play, or require did it require any splicing?

Found one from Divinity-something on ebay for under $40, shipped from China. It has the integrated signals but I never hooked up the wires (I like using the turn signals). It was plug-and-play, no splicing required (unless you wanted to use the integrated signals).

It looks good...I hate the white stock lens. How does it compare to the stocker in brightness? Can you get a pic with the taillight on, and the brakelight on?

Thanks!

I was going to get one with a blue lens, but I couldn't tell what it would look like in use. Anything other than a red tail/brake light is illegal, and the last thing I need is another excuse for the police to pull me over.

Looks great, runnr. I was thinking about a blacked out tail light but I feel the white lens goes with my white stripes.

Danno, I bet the light appears red. The blue lens shouldn't have any more effect on the color of the light than the black one does. The real question is "how visible is the light on a brigt sunny day??"

I will say this-- my blacked out lense on my busa DOES make it impossible for people to see any light when the sun is bright. Have had people yell at me that my tail light was NOT working a couple of times.

unfortunately my clear alternatives didn't work out so great. a real PITA to have to take it apart again, send it in, wait for another and oh yea,put it back together and take apart again if I want to ride while waiting.

The black does look nice with the smoked lights at least when they're off.

Swapped bikes with a friend last Sun, riding behind the 14 I could definitely see the tail light working, almost as well as stock. The blackened lens doesn't hinder the LEDs shining through even in bright sunlight. If someone can't see this tail light then they definitely shouldn't even be on the road!

Great pix man! Tell me, how did they steal your '06 ZX-14R? How are you protecting the new one? Thanks, A.
