Hi, Hub.

Seems like a lot of money for a few pieces of plastic and a few wires. Is it something that might actually benefit us? They don't seem to have one for the ZX-14 yet... -bg

OK, I've just re-read what I've written. Hub? be kind!

All these threads about ignition timing, timing retard, TREs, subs, flies, in/out, sub timing, airflow timing v ignition timing etc have been swimming around in the void where my brain should be for the last hew daze.

So far I've seen (thanks to Hub's vids) and heard experiences from many others that removing the flies makes a big difference to low down grunt. I think there is enough evidence to say that the subs restrict power, and it is RPM based and that opening them unleashes the ponies. I think hub has also shown that the gear is irrelevant to the sub opening (rate and timing).

BUT, these observation do not measure ignition timing, timing is important and strongly influences the low down grunt. I've experienced the influence first hand). So I don't think ignition timing has been adequately assessed. I fear I may start a shit fight with this. That's not my intention, I want to respectfully challenge some of the current thinking on this topic as I think there are conclusions being drawn that need further inquiry.

So, has anyone measured the actual ignition timing in each gear? I imagine this would require a rolling road (like dyno) and a timing light. It is still possible that the ignition is in fact retarded in 1st gear.

In favour of this proposition is:
1. The risk of novice hurting themselves with an unrestricted 1352cc high performance engine coupled with the factories' aversion to litigation based on normal risk management principles. They've at least attempted to protect the novices from themselves. Most novice riders don't learn to control the power with clutch and throttle, they think throttle control alone is enough.
2. my pants say so. I can get a stronger start from the stock 08ZX14 in 2nd than in 1st!?

I've been googling this for a little while and can't find any such tests. If there is such a test, can you please post a link?

If it is retarded in 1st to reduce the poke, imagine what might be achieved in 1st gear standing starts <manic-giggle>.

Hub, is it even possible to measure the timing? I haven't yet taken to the bike with tools, I pay a mechanic to my bidding for me, he's less likely to break it than I am. If it can be done then I may get them to take some measurements for me and I can post the results.

I have one on back order thru my local importer (for local warranty support) for this very reason.

Hi, Hub.

I THINK I heard you say that you would like to get your hands on a PC III. Is that correct?

Would the Ignition Module also be of interest?

Thanks. -bg

I'll see what I can work out. Could you please send me your mailing address via email?

Thanks. -bg
