Help Solution Gas Vapors Condensing on Bottom of Tank Bag
07/22/18 4:21 PM

Hey fellow ZX14 Owners:
I am looking for a solution. I have a magnetic tank bag and use it pretty every time I ride. The rubberized section sits on the tank over the gas cap. The gas vapor escaping from the tank via the cap condenses on the bottom of the tank bag. This causes the smell like gas. I noted that the rubber seal of the cap is spring loaded and imagine that is to allow for pressure relief for the gas as the temp rises. Has anyone had this problem and what have the done to alleviate it? My initial thoughts are to provide a channel to allow the vapor to escape....any thoughts? Thanks!

Maybe get some small furniture leg pads and put em under the bag?Stick em to the bag.Let some space be in there?

There already is one. I'm not sure they always work so well. When new, I used to hear my tank whistle like a tea kettle on a hot day after a ride. One day after a 4 hour long hot ride, I filled 'er up to the gills and parked it. I found a glob of goo in a small puddle of gas under the overflow vent tube. I've been told they put wax in them at the factory to keep condensation out while stored for sale.

My first suggestion would be to encourage a fuel expansion over flow to see if you can dissolve the wax.

Vapors should be trapped by the filler neck gasket and go down that little spout which should be sealed by that little rubber disk gasket everyone drops in the tank when they take their fuel cap ring out.

But you know vapors....they're vaporous.

It's a 2007...they all whistle;)Just releasing the vapes.Normal.I'd just do some spacers under there.Comes out through that nipple there, and out the sides of the cap.If it was liquid,it'd run down into the overflow deal. But since it's vapors it doesn't get forced down.

If original fairings are midnight sapphire blue, it's an 08 model if it's US. Same as mine.

Mine doesn't whistle anymore. I haven't heard it in a long time....then again I haven't ridden in a long time. It doesn't get as hot as it used to when I still had the OEM exhaust either. That might be why it no longer whistles--IDK.

It's supposed to come out of the nipple and go through a steel tube in the gas tank that leads to the nipple at the back of the tank where the rubber hose is connected. Problem is, they seal the steel tube with wax to prevent fuel tank condensation. When you hear it whistle, that's probably the vapors not going through the nipple because it's clogged. The vapors squeeze out of the filler neck gasket instead.

Putting some spacers under the bag won't hurt. I guess i'd put vinyl on the tank like I have so the clearcoat doesn't get marred. If you get any rubbing from the spacers, it should be minor and polish out fine. You might have a little trouble getting your magnetic tank bag to stick though.

If it was liquid,it'd run down into the overflow deal. But since it's vapors it doesn't get forced down.

If it was liquid gasoline, the pressure and solvent action would dissolve the clog. It would work how it's supposed to. If there is enough vapor pressure to squeeze past the filler neck gasket and/or the overflow nipple gasket, that's plenty of pressure to go down the tube if the the tube was unclogged.

Also, I have an aftermarket gas cap and that might be why mine doesn't whistle anymore. There's no nipple with gasket on a LighTech. Just a hole. Not really the best for the paint in the fuel cap ring recess. My EvoTech on the busa has a rubber tube you can shove in the overflow vent.

csmall, for my magnet tank bag, am using a soft rubber mat with holes pattern, this could help for better ventilation perhaps?
looking at the pic you may think that the setup is visually a bit odd... but guaranteed no slip/no scratch/no worries

Looks like I asked this question, then did not see the answers, thanks all!

It's been over a year. You still haven't solved this?'It sounds like you're simply overfilling it.Do you stop adding fuel when it reaches the bottom of the filler neck? Are you parking it in the Sun after riding?
