Getting Close to RACING!!!
03/29/16 2:54 PM

So I pulled my motor over the winter to mainly do valve springs for spray this year. Of course since I had the motor out I might as well do a little extra. My close friend owns a bike shop and is a well known motor builder, so he Milled and ported my head, and had a regrind done on my intake cam.

I put my motor back in over the weekend and she fired up first try without any issues! Now she will be on the Dyno tomorrow and Testing next weekend for our first race April 16th! I'm so excited for this season to start I can't stand it!!!

So you need to remove the motor tto change valve springs? I'm sure I won't do that this season. Next winter for mine and maybe I'll do some of the engine mods you mentioned. I'll be curious to hear how much hp they net you. I'm guessing just 5-7 hp but it all ads up.

Rook, you can't get to anything on the top of the motor without dropping it, but it's not hard. It should gain 10-15 horse but I will know how much it helped with I go to the track.

Chrly I'm in Tulsa. We haVE PMRA here. We have races here, Noble, and Wichita this year.

I envisioned it being a continuation of removing the head cover and camshafts but I guess not. I guess I'm ready to remove the engine but it will be a whole winter project for me.

he Milled and ported my head, and had a regrind done on my intake cam.

What do these mean? Cams, I understand you have ground a few degrees rounder--you cut the lobe a bit closer to a circle--which holds the valve open longer, righht?

Milling the head is shaving it so the combustion chamber is lower(shorter) which gives you higher compression, right? What is "porting" the head?

It should gain 10-15 horse but I will know how much it helped with I go to the track.

That definitely sounds worth it. Mind sharing approximately how much this would cost the ordinary guy walking in to have his cams and head reworked? I might want tbodies ported too on my gen1--maybe.

Engine work makes me drool. I'm dreaming of the day when I need some big chunky connecting rods and a HD crankshaft. That will be the turbo days which hopefully are coming in the next few years. i hope I get there before electric engines take over.

BG, trying to arrange to make one of those races as two friends race the same group. Neither have their bikes ready at this point.. I am thinking Sept 10th will be the meet .. Are all three tracks 1/4 mile?Would I need to do anything special to run back there, I belong to NHRA and am licensed.

I planned on pulling my motor in the first place, you may be able to do it without pulling the motor, but it's definitely easier all around if you do.

Milling the head is shaving it so the combustion chamber is lower(shorter) which gives you higher compression, right? What is "porting" the head?

Having a regrind done on my cam increased the lift. Since it increased the lift it also increased duration (valve is open longer), if you increase duration you lose compression. Milling the head brought my compression back up. Milling doesn't change the size of the combustion chamber, but moves the pistons closer to the valves. Thats why we didn't go with that big of a cam, cause I would lose to much compression. The factory ports on the 14's look REALLY good, but down closer to the valve seat it was pretty rough. He just smoothed that out on both the intake and exhaust side. Just a little on the exhaust side.

That definitely sounds worth it. Mind sharing approximately how much this would cost the ordinary guy walking in to have his cams and head reworked? I might want tbodies ported too on my gen1--maybe.

Man it all depends on who you go to. Some big name guys charge $1200 just for head work. It also all depends on how much of the work you can do on your own to save labor costs. If you drop your whole bike off to have it done it's gonna be really expensive. If you pull your motor yourself it will save a bunch of money.

Roughly just what I have, i'm not sure on prices

Valve springs $300
milling and porting $500-1000
New head gasket
Cam regrinds $350 - I think

Then whatever labor your shop charges.

Man thats awesome!!!!! Lol i'm in the same boat as they are! Yes, all tracks are 1/4 mile. If you're NHRA licensed you should be good. These are really the basics they check.

tether kill
chain guard
tail light
and of course leathers

but I think thats about it. I will talk with the committee and make sure i'm not forgetting something. Should be some damn good racing this year! I was hoping to run top gas on the motor, but I don't think it's gonna be quick enough on the motor.

Man , I thought about having my throttle bodies done, but after talking with Lee about it I decided against it. Hopefully it works out for you.

Man I will tell you Super Street is tough competition. Most all the guys that run it thats all they run, but there's always a good turnout.

Well, this will be no sooner than a year from now. Perhaps the Gen1 will be all but forgotten by then. You already have bigger Tbodies with the Gen2....I believe I heard the stock Tbodies were as close to perfect as can be (that might have been something you posted in the past year)...so who knows? I'd have to research that one more. About $600 to port tbodies and lath the secondaries shaft down to ~1/8". One good thing is Tbodies are not too hard to change so it would be possible to test OEM v ported. Hope someone else has already done this so I can stay $600 richer (or 600 less poor, as it were).

BG.. Just realized that teh 16th AND 17th are both race days... It is so tempting that I even checked the weather :)...How does teh Org handle rain? Man 1860 miles one way would be a bummer to get rained out LOL.
Question can you run two classes ? I was looking at Super Street for sure and mabey Street Et ?? I have no electronics or clutch help.

Man If I were you, I would talk to Anthony De La Torre. His 1st gen is nasty stock bore stock stroke. I do think he has bigger TB's as well.

Man they are usually on top of the weather the best they can be. If there is a pretty good chance of rain they will usually call it by wednesday or thursday. Or at least have a plan by then.
