Double bonus countershaft question
03/18/19 7:25 AM

Hi folks. So, here you can provide valuable information AND make fun of how stupid that "Libtard moron Maddevill is".

I need to know the size socket to use on the countershaft nut on an 06 ZX14. I know it has to be a
deep socket. I'll be using impact. I've heard it's a 32 or a 35. I hear some people use a 27 on the square
part of the nut. I will NOT be doing that.
I tried search with no luck.

TIA

Mad

With a sheet off of a small size notepad, a hole in the center that is small enough to pass the extended nut design, press the paper around the flats of the nut so you have an indent of the face of the nut size. Take a ruler, tape measure, and find the flat to flat at the half point of the indented paper. If both inch and mm are on each side of the tape measure, find said mm size and there you have it. That or take the inch and convert the number to mm online so you can see the socket size needed.

Chrome finished sockets are too brittle and may crack during impact be it breaker bar or air gun. Ass me how I know.
Black type looking sockets are more suited to heavy air gun work. Follow a tool truck to its next stop, enter truck and buy impact(heat treated = black finish) sockets, not chrome for this kind of work.

Pass on the bonus round...

"Ass me how I know"..lol.

I believe it's a 35.It is possible the tool kit has a wrench in there that fits. Now whether it works, who knows? They usually have the tools in there that are most relevant to what one would be changing.

Ok that's 2 votes for 35mm. Any others?
And I will not be measuring the nut. It's buried under that cover, covered with chain spooge and I doubt I could get the paper in deep enough to measure anyway. But thanks.

Thanks for that info. I think I already have a 35mm impact socket. Just want to verify the size.

I used the smaller flats. The large flats are not as deep. I guess if you have trouble, you could use two wrenches and both flats.

A hearty "Thanks Pal!" and the undying gratitude of shadetree wrenchers everywhere.
So, if I understand correctly, you guys using the 27 are putting it on the 4 flat sides at the end of the nut. Not on the actual hex at the bottom. I think the speedo reads off those flats. no problem with any damage from
the socket?

NO---good thing you brought that up. My pic might be a little misleading. I used the 27mm hex----NOT the square that the speed sensor reads off of. No idea if a slight deformation in the flats of the nut would cause speedo malfunction. You are supposed to replace the nut after it's removed anyway but most do not bother unless it's been removed a coulee times already.

I do not think a 27mm would fit the flats on the speed sensor portion. Close but seems a bit smaller than the full hex. The larger full hex is there to flatten the lock ring against but it could also be used to place a wrench on.

To be perfectly clear-- I would not use the outermost squarish lookin projection the speed sensor reads. Use a 27mm socket on the middle hex. If you want/need to get a 34-35mm to put on the biggest and innermost hex. I would suggest going to Advance Auto or O'reilly's or some place like that. They will usually have a set of axle nut sockets for impact wrenches. Free to borrow. Probably have 35mm and 27mm in that set.

I used a 24" breaker bar------BE CAREFUL you don't tip the bike off the stand. I came close with mine. If possible, place breaker bar at 12 o'clock to break the threads. Harder angle to wrench but less leverage in the direction the bike might tip over.

I guess people have used an impact but I would rather not for this job. Maybe a little hard on the transmission?
