Slip-on exhaust sound
11/23/14 12:27 PM

What makes the slip-on exhaust sound level? I checked out Yoshi, D&D, Muzzy, and Delkevic and found all have pretty much the same construction. 2.25 to 2.5" opening with perforated tube wrapped with grass-wool. If the material (Carbn fiber, SUS or Al)is the same, shouldn't the sound and sound level be the same? In reality, it is different. Any explanation?? I am talking about without the baffle.

I'm going to guess 3 basic variables see if you agree.

1. Muffler length is like a trombone that gives each a note, yes?
2. Packing weave and how many layers in the muffler?
3. Hole diameter in the tubes and how many rows?

Hi Hub,

Thank you for your input.

. Muffler length is like a trombone that gives each a note, yes? - Yes, this is totally true. 18" provides deeper sound than 8".
2. Packing weave and how many layers in the muffler? I though most suppliers use the similar kind of packing, but I guess they don't. Does this mean even quiet slip-ons can be louder once the packing wears out?
3. Hole diameter in the tubes and how many rows? This is something I didn't think about.

Very intersting. Living in a big city, I can't install loud exhaust (well I can but my neighbors will call cops). So my choice will be a longer and well-packed one.

Put it this way, you look down a slip it's an open pipe packed or not packed.

This is something I didn't think about.

Right. So the bigger the hole the faster the pack leaves, i.e., more burned packing if the holes are enlarged to send the sound thru the holes before the tip end. So if there were a lot of tiny holes and a lot of rows, that still says the flame comes in and burns thru those areas as if the holes were bigger, think square inch of exposure and it lands about even burn, more or less.

... my neighbors will call cops). So my choice will be a longer and well-packed one.

We are back to 'snuff-or-nots' as a loophole for the neighbors. That is still going to be a very loud exhaust, if you can hold the muffler up and see out the end.

I know a few other brands have these too. My 2Bros slip-ons were very loud till I added a P1 sound suppressor tip. Drops the volume a few decibels. Still rumbles, and screams at speed, but acceptable.

Taking the benefit of Black Friday sale, I ordered a set of Delkevic slip-on. I ordred 18" (450mm) stainless steel. With the Black Friday discount, the price includig shipping/handling is $350. Delkevic has been extremely responsive to all my silly quesitons and act fast - my order has already been shipped!! I will post some pix once I install them. I was thinking about getting CF but decided to stick with SUS for its durability. I am sure technologies improved CF durability but it used to be pretty bad. When I installed an aftermarket (not Delkevic) CF slip-on on my 1994 F2, it did "self-disassembling" while I was riding after 6000 miles or so. It could be simply a bad produciton unit but since then I am not really into CF even though it should look better on my ZX. With the chrome slip-on, my ZX would looke like Gen1 Orange/Black. In the worst case, I will powder coat the slip on.
