HM Q Shifter on 14R Vortex link
06/05/19 10:23 PM

I have the basic Vortex Rear sets on the BBW and am considering a HM Q shift. I dont want the entire lever gismo but the strain gauge module type that interfaces with the or replaces Vortex shift linkage and the correct 2014 14R electrical interface cables. Maybe something like the HM Plus SS.

Is this a stupid Idea for the 1-2 track days I do a yr? Cant seem to figure out from their web page exactly what I should be evaluating or a local dealer who would have a clue

Depends on how you ride off the track I suppose. I have three bikes that have some sort of quick shifter on them and only one of those gets tracked. Two of the three are able to be adjusted one is fixed. I prefer to be able to adjust but it's not mandatory with a quality piece. Personally I like them. If you don't want to use them, don't. Just shift normal.

Shift(kill) time is important to me. If your all about being randy racer you'll need to be in the 45-65 millisec range. I'm not that guy 80-90 millisec will still get a shift that will put half a bike length on the best clutch shifting guy without being hard on the shift forks or dogs.

I have an old BootBySmith QS run through what was then ECUeditor at the time(now Woolich Racing) which in my opinion is the best by far. The HM lever/strain which I would say is very good and adjustable and an Annitori Racing QS strain gauge that is non adjustable, the newer ones are adjustable.

Lots of manufactures making a quality product that can just plug and play. The only one I would recomend against is the one sold by PowerComander that's non adjustable. It almost cost me a transmition on a C14.

Last weekend I finally made it to a race..unfortunately I had an electrical connector cause problems but had not chased it down and figured I would just go back to foot shifting..I gotta say that in my case, I would do it if for only one run a year :) I have the Holeshot Electric Power shifter controlled thru the Power commander so each gear kill time can be individually set..Only up shifts but I love it..

I think i am going to call Healtech about their iQSE Q shifter. The strain gauge is in a small donut/washer package and slides onto the Vortex con rod. control is via bluetooth iPhone so setup looks easy

It's a fun feature to add to your bike but I'm sure you can learn to upshift clutchless just by doing a fast throttle chop. I have not tried this technique.

My HM Plus without SS is not a reliable shifter for high load/high rpm/high throttle at 65 mls. I would not recommend unless you go with the HM Plus with SS or the HM GP. I have not tried them but looks like the SS makes it capable of a fast shift without missing most of the time.

So is it worth it? ...on a big ol bike made for the drag strip?? I would say an air shifter or electric would be better for what our bikes get used for. A foot quick shifter makes the experience more road race-like. I enjoy it. If you really want to use it for racing, better make sure you spend on a high end model. $400 for a shifter that causes your shift to BANG back to the previous gear is a disappointment.

Also, I know 1wheel peel knows his stuff but my memory tells me 90 mls felt like about as fast as I normally clutch shift. You do have 100% throttle in 90 mls but if you ask me, that feels pretty jerky with that long of a kill time.

Get something adjustable/gear and /rpm at least. /TP would seem a plus too if that is available.

GP shift might help too. Can be done with a Vortex knuckle but you need to do something to clear the side stand spring peg.

I know I dont want to go GP shifting configuration, too many yrs of muscle memory to revise.

I do usually go clutchless at the track day especially since i installed the star shift upgrade. I guess my desire is to smooth out the clutchless upshifts with electronic assist to kill the signal to the coil. My track day clutchless upshifts are indeed klunkey. This is just a new toy to play with and with bluetooth enabled iphone control interface revising the delay seems simple enough.

Your memory does not match my experience. My B-King and 14R are both set in the 80-90 millisec range, yes very slow by racing standards but still faster than anyone I know can hand clutch/shift. Both shift like butter. Both get wrung out on the back roads and both have multiple passes at the Tx Mile, the ZX has made multiple passes down the 1/4 at the Texas MotorPlex. 20k miles plus on the B-King, just rolled over 19k on the ZX. Zero misshifts with either.

The CBR is fixed and non adjustable at 65 millisec. It gets wrung out on the back roads as well as the occasional track day. I've had at least six missed 1-2 shifts on the CBR with only 7k miles on it.

I don't have the skills of a professional, far from it I just love to have fun on my bikes. These types of QS's are perfect for what I do. If I was serious about racing in any venue there are better ways to churn the butter. I work hard for my money so while I will wring them out I also take very good care of them and do not want to be splitting the cases on any of them to replace bent shift forks or knurled cogs.

Best wishes on whatever you get Rudy! Report back your experiences.

Thanks guys, I ordered the iQSE-1 from Healtech sales in ID. It has some interesting features I didnt know about such as adaptive delays that learn how you shift and selectable min rpm settings so around town it is off unless the rpms exceed the setpoint such as 7K rpm. The tech I spoke with was very informative and technically explained why you dont want to QS at low rpms, cause the flywheel momentum is low enough that engine braking happens and could cause damage to the trans gears.

$315 and About a 2 week wait for parts.

That sounds like a deal if it works very reliably. As already mentioned, i'd go expensive next time because cheaper didn't cut it for me.

Seems to me we hear people asking for info about QSs but there is not always a lot of reporting back about the results. There should be a thread devoted to real life experience reports of all models of quikshifters.

They have a 30 day money back guarantee (tech said no questions asked) and 2 yr warranty so seemed like a good good value for $$ and relative low risk. Still a little bit cheaper than the 2020 BMW S1000 RR Im lusting over currently.

In about a yr im punching out of the rat race and will need ATVs and dirt bikes and lightweight multi-strada toys so the BBW is it for a sportbike for me for a long time.

Agreed. Especially with the changes in technology.

I've heard of that one. Looks like they have updated it since I last looked at it.
