Thinking about Nitrous
08/26/10 8:09 AM

I am not a track or strip racer, but I am thinking some more horsepower at my fingertips would be interesting. What I am wondering is would a 30 shot: 1. Really feel crazy. 2. Hurt the bike. I have a full race Tsukigi system and a custom mapped PCV Showing 172 hp on the Dyno with 100.36 torque. +4 teeth on rear sprocket. Without getting into re- doing the engine I'm thinking this is the cheapest HP addition. Opinions fron any nitrous guys would help. Thanks

Everyone who runs nitrous, rebuilds motors. Nitrous Oxide is a serious corrosive and eats injectors, valves, and pistons. Plus it increases strain on the valve train and crank and increases operating temperature. Which leads to premature part failures.

I've never ran it.....I'm more of a turbo guy, but guys usually complain that for street riding its kind of a limited fun. A few pushes of the button and its time to refill the bottle. Plus it depends on what kind of system you use, if you spray directly into the throttle bodies a 30 hp shot is supposed to be pretty noticeable, but if you fog the air box its a much softer hit. From the research I did a 30 shot wasn't too awful hard on the engine, but you'd prolly want more before long. And like privateer said bigger hits of nitrous can be pretty hard on the engine, especially the fact that it hits suddenly, pretty hard on engine internals. If you were a drag racer I might do it, other wise I don't know. I thought about it for the street, but just saved up the money for a turbo kit instead.

How hard on the bike is the Turbo...Also from what I have seen they kinda mess the look of the bike up..I like the hidden kind of power

The turbo kits I have seen are pretty much hidden except for the exhaust, usually exiting on the right side of the belly pan. At low boosts, the reliability is quite high.

In my opinion, nitrous isn't hidden power. The bottle is butt ugly obvious. Ok for drag racing classes that allow it.

But nothing besides a supercharger can come close to a turbocharged engine.

And soon enough, we'll have a supercharger for the ZX14, though I don't want to know the price, it will be high.

Don't bother with nitrous. All it is, is a 10 second blast, and do it enough times and you will be paying for a new top end.

The problem with you kids, is you watched the Fast and the Furious movies and think nitrous is good on the street. It isn't.

If I want horsepower, the ultimate source is displacement, stroke, and head flowing. I'd have Carpenter Race Engines give me 1445 cc with the valves, porting, cams, pistons, rods, crank, and strengthened clutch all up to the task. If I wanted more, I'd hang a turbocharger on it.

Then I could ride around all day long and have it when I needed it, as often as I needed it.

Privateer pretty much covered it My turbo system is completely hidden under the bodywork...and at low boost is pretty easy on the engine, and like he said, reliability is good. Plus you have the power all the time whenever you want it. The downside is you're going to spend 3-5000 depending on whether you find a good used kit or go new, and get it tuned etc. The upside is the kit will go from one 14 to the next if you choose...so its really a one time investment in big power if you want to look at it that way. And down the road with the right engine and kit mods a turbo 14 can make HUGE power if thats your thing
